The County of San Luis Obispo, California, is seeking a transformational Behavioral Health Director to provide strategic leadership and administrative oversight for its Behavioral Health Department during a critical period of organizational strengthening. This role offers a unique opportunity to lead a compassionate, community-focused department while advancing accountability, performance, and service delivery across mental health and substance use programs. The Director currently oversees five direct reports and works closely with the fiscal team, providing input on budget development and oversight.
The ideal candidate is an executive-level behavioral health leader, ideally with experience at the Director level or equivalent, with demonstrated success leading complex public-sector behavioral health systems. They bring extensive experience in behavioral health administration, a strong foundation in clinical service delivery, and a comprehensive understanding of public-sector financing and diverse revenue streams. The successful candidate is an effective communicator and trusted leader who mentors managers and collaborates productively with advisory bodies, service partners, and community stakeholders.
