Overview

Principal Product Experience Designer (Freelance) Principal Product Experience Designer (Freelance). We are seeking a seasoned designer to lead the vision and execution of end-to-end digital experiences used by a global consumer audience. In this freelance role, you will own complex initiatives from early discovery through delivery, using a blend of interaction design, visual design, systems thinking, and data-informed decision making. You will act as a strategic partner to product and engineering leadership, helping define what we build, why we build it, and how it should feel for customers. You will be the design authority on high-impact projects, guiding teams to think holistically about the customer journey and translating intricate business problems into clear, intuitive, and scalable solutions. You should be comfortable operating in ambiguous problem spaces, influencing at the executive level, and raising the bar for design quality across the organization. Responsibilities

Own and articulate the end-to-end experience vision for complex, multi-surface consumer products. Translate strategy into tangible deliverables such as journey maps, service blueprints, process flows, wireframes, interactive prototypes, and high-fidelity mocks. Lead collaborative workshops and design reviews with senior stakeholders to align on product direction, scope, and success criteria. Define user scenarios, use cases, and information architecture in close partnership with product management, engineering, research, data science, and content strategy. Advocate for human-centered design principles, ensuring customer needs and insights are embedded throughout the product lifecycle. Plan and run evaluative and generative research activities, including usability testing, concept validation, and A/B experiments, and translate findings into concrete design improvements. Create clear specifications and documentation for interaction behaviors, states, and edge cases to support efficient implementation by engineering teams. Establish, evolve, and maintain shared design systems, patterns, and guidelines to promote consistency and quality across platforms. Mentor designers at various levels, providing feedback, coaching, and frameworks that elevate craft and strategic thinking. Leverage qualitative and quantitative data to inform design decisions, measure impact, and iterate on experiences over time. Explore and incorporate emerging technologies—such as AI-driven features, voice, and multimodal interfaces—into cohesive product experiences where appropriate. What a Typical Engagement May Involve

Partnering with product leaders to define a long-term vision and roadmap for a customer-facing experience spanning multiple devices and touchpoints. Working from ambiguous business requirements and customer insights to frame the right problems, define hypotheses, and establish design principles. Designing flows, interactions, and content strategies that balance user needs, technical constraints, and business objectives. Presenting design rationale and trade-offs to executive stakeholders, building alignment and driving clear decisions. Shepherding experiences from early concepts through launch, collaborating closely with cross-functional partners and ensuring design intent is preserved in production. Continuously refining and extending the product experience based on data, feedback, and changing customer expectations. Basic Qualifications

10+ years of professional experience in UX, product design, or interaction design for digital products and services. 8+ years designing consumer-facing experiences across the full product lifecycle (from discovery through iterative improvement). A portfolio demonstrating ownership of end-to-end experiences across multiple platforms (e.g., web, mobile, connected devices) and showing strong interaction and visual design craft. Bachelor’s degree or higher in Design, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related field; or equivalent practical experience. Preferred Qualifications

Graduate degree in Design, HCI, Information Science, Computer Science, Cognitive Psychology, or a closely related discipline. Track record as lead designer on large-scale, cross-functional initiatives with significant complexity. Demonstrated ability to communicate design strategy, trade-offs, and impact to executive audiences. Experience defining and governing design systems, pattern libraries, and UX standards for multi-team organizations. Hands-on experience integrating AI-powered capabilities into user experiences and using AI tools within the design workflow. Background designing voice or multimodal interfaces, or other emerging interaction paradigms. Proven ability to synthesize qualitative insights and quantitative metrics into clear design decisions and prioritized roadmaps. Experience mentoring and developing senior-level design talent and fostering a culture of critique, experimentation, and continuous improvement. Ability to take ambiguous, open-ended problem spaces and shape them into well-defined, customer-grounded design opportunities that align with business goals. This is a freelance engagement suitable for a principal-level designer who is comfortable operating autonomously, partnering directly with senior leadership, and delivering impactful work in a fast-moving environment.
