Job Description TITLE:

Police Officer

Basic Function Under direct supervision, monitors and oversees security for assigned sites such as GIS schools, administrative offices, support services locations and other auxiliary sites. Observes and reports suspicious activities of personnel or others. Observes and reports unauthorized persons on district property. Assesses other problem situations.

Minimum Qualifications

Basic TCOLE Peace Officer Certification

High School diploma or GED required 48 college hours preferred

Bilingual preferred

Three years law enforcement experience Work history demonstrating excellent decision-making skills and sound judgment

Primary Responsibilities

Represents GIS in providing a safe environment. Secures and monitors access to all entrance gates as scheduled or as needed. Patrols assigned GIS property during day/night/week-end shifts to prevent theft or damage and to ensure adequate monitoring and security. May be required to open and lock gates.

Periodically monitors halls and walks the school grounds. Generates and maintains a log of activities that occur in and around the school and other facilities on a daily basis.

Documents unusual and/or suspicious behavior. Identifies and reports unauthorized personnel. Secures restricted areas to prevent unauthorized access.

As a security measure, monitors students, parents, guests and HISD employees on district property.

When assigned to a satellite or auxiliary location, maintains a log of all persons and vehicles entering or leaving secured areas.

Assesses problem situations and maintains daily log of activities.

Writes incident reports and maintains daily log of activities.

Assists police and/or emergency responders in emergencies.

Adheres to HISD’s policies and procedures.

Performs other job-related duties as assigned

Physical and Mental Requirements

Must demonstrate elements including temperament, patience, maturity, self-discipline, job knowledge, initiative, dependability, strong communication skills (verbal and written), solid organizational/record keeping skills, self-initiative and work productivity.

Must have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Satisfactory supervisory evaluations from current and previous supervisors.

Must be comfortable with and understand working dogs and maintain a home life compatible with care and maintenance of police canine.

Mental Demands Maintain emotional control under stress. Ability to read, analyze and interpret data and information for effective classroom presentation. Ability to actively engage students and parents in the learning process. Ability to effectively resolve parent and student concerns and manage student behavior in the classroom in a positive, constructive way. Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing with a variety of people.

Physical Demands Frequent standing, stooping, bending, pulling and pushing. Frequent speaking and listening, reading, writing, and using computers. Ability to lift and move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other classroom equipment.

Leadership Responsibilities No supervisory or direct people management responsibilities. May provide occasional work guidance, technical advice and training to staff.

Work Complexity / Independent Judgment Must demonstrate and maintain sound judgment as it relates to matters of law as well as Departmental and District policy. Must be able to make good decisions, with or without direct supervision, as necessary to maintain public safety.

The job receives regular and ongoing supervision. BUDGET AUTHORITY No budget development activity is required

Problem Solving Decisions are made on both routine and non-routine matters with some latitude, but are still subject to approval.

Job is occasionally expected to recommend new solutions to problems and improve existing methods or generate new ideas.

Impact of Decisions Decisions usually have minor, small and possibly incremental impact on the department or facility. Errors are usually discovered in succeeding operations where most of the work is verified or checked and is normally confined to a single department or phase of the organizational activities resulting in brief inconvenience.

Communication / Interactions Collaborate and solve problems - works with others to resolve problems, clarify or interpret complex information/policies, and provide initial screening/negotiations without approval authority. Interactions are typically with customers, senior level professional staff, and managers

Customer Relationships Takes routine or required customer actions to meet customer needs. Responds promptly and accurately to customer complaints, inquiries and requests for information and coordinates appropriate follow-up. May handle escalated issues passed on from coworkers or subordinates.

Working / Environmental Conditions Work involves continuous exposure to hazardous substances, potentially dangerous situations, and unpleasant work conditions such as adverse weather conditions or extreme risk of accidental or ill health. Ability to carry and/or lift 45 pounds or more.
