Basic Job Functions: The role of the Safety & Health Director includes leading the division in all aspects of safety and health and being an integral part of the corporate wide safety team. This is a supervisory role with direct reports. The responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to: • Growing long term, sustainable relationships to drive continuous improvement in safety culture, performance and systems • Member of the division leadership team • Develop, communicate and implement strategies and plans to support Nucor’s Challenge of “Becoming the World’s Safety Steel Company” • Interpret and apply regulatory and consensus standards • Build, facilitate and maintain effective Safety & Health processes, managements systems and training that drives hazard recognition and prevention • Responsible for leading growth and development of teammates in the Safety and Health Department • Assisting in incident investigations • Track/review safety data and use analytical tools to identify trends and opportunities for improvement • Build consistency across multiple departments Safety is the most important part of all jobs within Nucor; therefore, candidates must be able to demonstrate the ability to initiate, lead, and uphold safety policies, practices, procedures, and housekeeping standards at all times. Minimum Requirements: • Minimum 3 years safety & health experience as a safety professional in an industrial setting or steel industry experience Detailed Selection Criteria: • Occupational Safety -Using knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, strategies, and judgment to determine whether events or processes comply with laws and regulations to promote standards as well as working to continuously improve processes to ensure safety of all teammates. • Communication – Effectively expresses ideas or tasks to an individual or group. Demonstrates effective listening skills through receiving feedback, following instructions and showing a genuine interest in others. • Leadership Presence and Courage – Willingness and confidence to have immediate and direct conversations on critical alignment issues such as teamwork, building relationships, initiating and supporting change, and production process issues that arise. This includes the willingness to face adversity and conflict. • Coaching and Developing Others - Identifying the strengths and developmental needs of others to include coaching, mentoring, teaching, training, or otherwise helping others to improve their skills and work effectively. • Problem Solving and Judgement/Decision Making - Identifying problems and analyzing or reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and choose the most appropriate solution. • Teamwork – Working as part of a coordinated effort with others to achieve a common goal. Ability to distinguish and align personal needs with the needs of the team and Nucor as a whole. • Attention to Detail – Thorough in accomplishing tasks, no matter how small they may be, and taking care to make sure that expectations are met. • Business Acumen – General business knowledge and an understanding of how Nucor makes money. Preferences: • Prior leadership experience • OSHA VPP experience • Bachelor’s degree in occupational safety & health or related field • Knowledge and understanding of OSHA 1910 standards
