DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATION AND PUBLIC RELATIONS

In-district Residency Required.

$90,000 - $105,000 salary range.

Independence School District.

Fair Labor Standards Act Status: Exempt.

Reports To: Superintendent of Schools.

Supervises: Public Relations staff.

Job Goal: To communicate effectively with

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or a related field preferred
  • Minimum 5 years experience in Journalism, Public Relations or a related field

Performance Responsibilities

  • Determine communication protocol in a wide variety of circumstances
  • Consult on strategic communication to meet short and long-term goals
  • Determine best format for communication
  • Responsible for communication between the district and internal/external audiences
  • Responsible for management of staff creating website and social media content
  • Leadership of several internal groups, including PR Liaisons in each of 29 schools
  • Creation of communication plans for various district initiatives
  • Work closely with the media
  • Prepare printed materials that can be shared with external groups or individuals related to District programs and services
  • Prepare district videos
  • Prepare information, talking points, speeches, graphic presentations for public presentations
  • Establish annual objectives for the district communication program and plan a budget to meet the objectives
  • Maintains open lines of communication with community organizations and provides prompt responses to requests for public information about the district, its policies, and its programs
  • Coordinates dissemination of materials through the schools
  • Requires being "on call" for emergency issues/events
  • Other duties as assigned by the Superintendent

Terms Of Employment

The Director of Public Relations will be employed for a twelve-month position. The salary and work year will be established by the Board of Education.

Evaluation

Performance of this job will be evaluated by the immediate supervisor, using the Administrator Performance Based Summative Appraisal.
