The Role - What You'll Do Barr is looking for a talented Database Management Specialist to become an essential part of our dynamic Information Systems team. In this hybrid role, you will focus on optimizing performance, ensuring the integrity, and enhancing the security of our internal database systems while supporting initiatives for modernization and AI-readiness. You'll have the chance to manage SQL Server environments, implement and uphold role-based access controls, and set up monitoring and alerting systems that proactively address database issues. Additionally, you will perform routine maintenance, optimization, and backup tasks while collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure secure, scalable, and reliable data access across various systems. Your Impact - Key Responsibilities Database Administration and Maintenance:

Manage and maintain the SQL Server environment, including patching, upgrades, performance tuning, and routine tasks like indexing and backups.

Security and Compliance:

Design and implement role-based access control (RBAC) to enhance database security. Support data governance and change management practices aligned with emerging standards.

Modernization and Cloud Migration:

Assist in transitioning from legacy systems to innovative cloud-based platforms, improving database structures and workflows.

Strategic Planning:

Focus on adopting emerging technologies such as NoSQL, vector databases, and Azure-native services. Support AI/ML initiatives through data readiness and contribute to high-availability and disaster-recovery strategies.

About the Opportunity A

hybrid

work arrangement is available for this position, allowing a blend of working from Barr's office and home office. This role is based out of Barr's Minneapolis, Minnesota office.

About You - Required Core Competencies Education:

Bachelor's degree in computer science, data engineering, information systems, or a related field, or equivalent experience.

Experience:

A minimum of three years of relevant experience, including: Managing Microsoft SQL Server in a production environment.

Proficiency in T-SQL, query optimization, and database performance tuning.

Knowledge of cloud-based database services, particularly within the Microsoft Azure ecosystem (e.g., Azure SQL Database, Azure Monitor).

SQL Server backup, recovery, and high availability strategies, especially SQL Server replication.

Configuring and maintaining RBAC in SQL Server.

Software/Programs:

SQL Server, SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), Microsoft Azure ecosystem (e.g., Azure SQL Database, Azure Monitor).

Communication:

Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse audiences.

Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship needed from Barr, present or future.

Helpful Additional Experience (Not Required) Experience with NoSQL databases like MongoDB, Redis, or DynamoDB.

Familiarity with vector databases (e.g., Pinecone, Weaviate, Qdrant, Milvus) or embedding storage for AI/ML applications.

Understanding of data architecture patterns used in AI/ML pipelines.

Exposure to cloud-native database services in Azure.

Ability to work with JSON-based or schema-less data models.

Familiarity with graph databases like Neo4j or Amazon Neptune.

Compensation:

Anticipated salary range of $80,000-$100,000 annually, based on experience, qualifications, and other compensable factors. This position may also qualify for discretionary cash bonuses based on team and individual performance. It is classified as exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
