Under supervision, lifeguards an assigned beach and ocean area from an assigned station or in an emergency rescue vehicle in the first line protection of the lives and property of beach patrons.

Lifeguards an assigned area from a tower, an emergency rescue vehicle or ocean rescue vessel.

Performs ocean rescues, informs bathers and boaters of hazardous ocean conditions, and removes dangerous objects from the beach and ocean area.

Performs routing and preventative maintenance on towers, vehicles, vessels, equipment and other facilities within an assigned area.

Maintains daily records of activities and completes reports on same.

Interacts with the public on the beach; answers questions and assists patrons with problems and advises of Municipal Ordinances.

Operates specialized lifesaving equipment and performs various fist aid practices of a highly skilled nature.

Participates in all rescue, first aid and aquatic emergencies until relieved by a supervisor.

Assists in supervising the lifeguarding activities of subordinates on a limited basis and as directed.

Performs other related duties.

Knowledge & Abilities

Knowledge of principles and practices of modern lifesaving techniques, small boat safety, and operations of equipment and apparatus used.

Knowledge of Emergency Medical Technician practices and procedures including specialized paramedical first aid techniques.

Ability to swim in adverse weather and surf conditions for extended periods of time and to perform ocean rescues under said conditions.

Ability to size up emergencies and adopt effective courses of action.

Ability to maintain excellent public relations.

Minimum Qualifications Education & Experience

High school graduate or equivalent GED.

Minimum 720 hours experience as a Huntington Beach Recurrent Ocean Lifeguard I or equivalent(evaluated on a case by case basis).

Physical

Minimum age: 18 years by date of appointment.

Excellent health.

Vision 20/40 un-corrected by glasses or lenses.

Licenses/Certifications Required

Social Security Card

Valid California Driver's License

Valid CPR Certification Card

Valid EMT Certification Card issued by the State of California or County EMS (by time of application); National Registry is acceptable at time of application, but new hires are required to obtain the State of California or County EMS EMT Certification by time of appointment

Huntington Beach Lifeguard Training Certificate or equivalent (evaluated on a case by case basis)

APPLICATION & SELECTION PROCEDURE

An official City of Huntington Beach online job application must be filled out in its entirety.

Applicants are required to provide proof of required certifications, licenses, and diploma by the time of application. Copies of these items must be uploaded and attached to your online application prior to submittal.

Applications will be closely reviewed for relevant experience, education and training.

Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in the selection process that includes, but is not limited to, a department interview. The testing schedule will be announced after the closing date.

Placement on the eligibility list will be determined by Marine Safety Management based on the results of the selection process, department review of past performance, and input from supervisory staff.

The top candidates may be invited to a Fire Chief's interview to determine final placement on the hiring list.

Offers for reassignment to Ocean Lifeguard II (Senior Ocean Lifeguard) may be subject to the applicant's availability to accept a full schedule.

EXAM COMPONENT WEIGHT Oral Board Exam - weight 100%

Testing is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, March 7, 2026 Employees regularly assigned/required to drive a city or personal vehicle in the course and scope of work shall be required to participate in the DMV Employer Pull Notice program, due to the performance of field duties that may require operation of a City vehicle.

Public Employee Disaster Service Worker In accordance with Government Code Section 3100, all Huntington Beach city employees are required to perform assigned disaster service worker duties in the event of an emergency or a disaster.
