
Retail Ophthalmic Dispensing Trainee

Summary
Assist customers with frame selection, fitting, and dispensing. Utilize technical information to interpret prescriptions and provide accurate product information for optical products and services.
Pay Base pay range: $17.50 per hour – $26.25 per hour.
Essential Responsibilities
Assist each customer in frame and lens selection.
Provide accurate product information regarding frames, lenses, and other services.
Inform customers with third‑party insurance of benefits and additional charges not covered by insurance.
Sell, fit, and dispense frames and accessories.
Maintain a clean and orderly dispensing area.
Ensure accurate patient pricing.
Communicate clearly with lab and optometrist to ensure prescription accuracy.
Fulfill education and experience requirements to become a licensed optician within state or contract mandated timeframe.
Adhere to privacy, confidentiality, and proprietary company policies and procedures (i.e., HIPAA).
Participate in required training and educational activities to maintain professional affiliations and organizational requirements.
Maintain cleanliness of all equipment, workstations, and overall facility daily.
Complete additional responsibilities as assigned to meet changing business needs.
Education
High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience & Background
Current New York or Massachusetts apprentice permit required to practice.
Permit file must be on file with Human Resources.
One to three months of related experience or training.
Language Skills
Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals.
Write routine reports and correspondence.
Speak effectively before groups of customers or associates.
Mathematical Skills
Calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, and percentages.
Apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Reasoning Ability
Apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
Deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Physical Demands Stand, use hands and fingers, handle, feel, pick, and pinch most of the time; occasionally stand, walk, reach with hands and arms; frequently lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. Moderate noise level; use of computers, printers, and machines.
