Hiring Range: $49,737.00 - $56,698.00/year
Work Day/Hours: Vary 9:00 am - 9:00 pm Monday-Friday and 8:30 am - 2:00 pm Saturday, with some additional nights and weekend hours.

W.D. Hill Recreation Center is a historic community center located in the heart of Durham, serving neighborhoods with patrons from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds. With a focus on partnering with community organizations, W.D. Hill is a full-service facility hosting a variety of program offerings tailored to and enjoyed by every age group, as well as a gymnasium, fitness center, playground, and tennis courts.
We are looking for a motivated professional to be our new Recreation Specialist at W.D. Hill. This is an opportunity to work closely with a highly skilled team to provide great experiences for the community at this key center in Durham. In addition to general planning and implementation of programs for all ages, in this role you will collaborate with non-profits and community groups to develop shared vision programming, help to host events and seasonal activities, and take part in providing a safe and enriching place for young people to gather.
This is a position that requires flexible scheduling to provide coverage to the facility during open hours. Please review the schedule times listed to ensure that you can meet expectations to regularly work some evening and weekend hours.
Duties / Responsibilities
Knowledge of group recreational supervision and the rules and regulations governing various competitive games, including athletics.
Ability to organize and instruct specialty area.
Knowledge of prevention education and positive alternative concept.
Ability to maintain program records and prepare clear and precise written report.
Ability to deal with "at risk" and "high risk" youth as identified by prevention education standards.
Ability to organize and actively facilitate/instruct a variety of recreational and social activities.
Ability to adhere to program standards and objectives outlined by supervisors.
Ability to follow direction and complete tasks as assigned.
Excellent character, integrity, and adaptability.
Ability to prepare clear and precise written reports.
Ability to meet and deal tactfully with the public.
Ability to keep inventory records.
Ability to communicate, demonstrate, teach, and provide program opportunities for a diverse group of participants at various ages and skill levels.
Takes responsibility for the health, well-being, and safety of participants, of all skill levels and abilities, in a variety of indoor and outdoor activities.
Must possess knowledge and skills to provide/assist with personal care, mobility, and communication of participants.
Recognize and respond to opportunities for group problem solving.
Supervises diversified age groups in a variety of indoor and outdoor activities.
Organizes and teaches skill development for a specific special area.
Encourage respect for personal property, City equipment and facilities.
Set a good example for campers in all areas, including cleanliness, punctuality, cleaning up after activities, rules and sportsmanship.
Maintains order.
Leads and directs community work and special projects conducted by program participants.
Participates in prevention education workshops and participant group discussions.
Attend and participate in staff meetings, in-service training programs, orientation, and evaluation sessions.
Observes necessary precautions to secure the safety of recreation participants and spectators, renders first aid in case of minor injury.
Assists in maintaining activity and attendance records; submits required paperwork on time.
Adheres to DPR Program standards.
May supervise volunteers.
Minimum Qualifications & Experience
Associate’s degree in recreation, leisure services, or a related field
Two years of recreation services experience in area of assignment.
Valid, unrestricted, North Carolina driver’s license "or" if you currently have another state’s driver’s license, must be willing and able to obtain a valid NC driver’s license within 60 days of hire
Must obtain Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED certification with Anaphylaxis and Epinephrine Auto Injector Certification within the first six months of employment.
Additional Preferred Skills
Experience working with participants 1-18 years of age.
Experience with ActiveNet or other recreation software
At least 1 year of experience planning or implementing recreation programs.
Available to work on weekends and some late nights.
