
Outside Machinist – Shipbuilding
* Must have secret clearance *
Fully onsite position in Newport News, VA
Pay: $35/hr (flat rate) +$140 per diem
Key Responsibilities
Install and align ship machinery, propulsion systems, and valves
Operate lathes, portable milling/drill machines, and cargo cranes
Perform valve overhauls, lube oil flushing, and hydrostatic testing
Repair AC/refrigeration systems and install hydraulic components
Conduct boiler tests, shafting, bearing work, and optical alignment
Read and interpret complex blueprints and technical drawings
Maintain system cleanliness and ensure OSHA compliance
What You’ll Need
4+ years of machinist experience (naval or commercial preferred)
Strong blueprint reading and mechanical assembly skills
Familiarity with OSHA regulations and shipyard safety standards
Ability to use precision measuring tools (micrometers, rulers, etc.)
Completion of a formal apprenticeship or equivalent training
Work Environment
Shipyard setting: indoors/outdoors, all weather conditions
Must be able to lift 40 lbs, climb, kneel, crawl, and work in confined spaces
Respirator fit test and physical exam required

Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $45.00/hr.
