
TRAVELING SUPERINTENDENT
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Superintendent is responsible for on-site construction operations including hiring, training, scheduling, cost control, safety, and quality. This role works closely with the project manager, engineering, owner's representatives, subcontractors, and vendors. The Superintendent must understand the project manager's duties and can fill that role when needed. Work is performed indoors and outdoors year-round, with potential around-the-clock schedules during facility shutdowns. This position requires travel to project sites.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum 5 years of industry-related construction experience, or equivalent combination with a Construction Management degree
Experience in grain handling construction and food & beverage production line change projects required
Current CPR/First Aid and OSHA 30 certifications required
Proficient in reading specifications and drawings
Experience managing small-to-medium scale projects
Ability to supervise workers across multiple trades
Experience hiring, training, and promoting field personnel
Must be willing and able to travel to project sites
Coursework in scheduling, project management, or engineering is a plus
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Strong verbal and written communication, basic math, and Windows-based computer literacy. Ability to read and work from drawings and specs, analyze job cost and productivity reports, identify cost-saving opportunities, and ensure work meets company and industry quality standards. Must be physically capable of lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling as required.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES Safety & Training
Lead site safety program; conduct weekly safety meetings and review project safety trends
Onboard new hires with clear safety expectations; recognize and reinforce safe behavior
Review daily Safe Plan of Actions (SPAs) and ensure supervisors coach employees on their use
Investigate all incidents within 24 hours and complete root cause analysis before resuming related tasks
Prepare lift plans and ensure proper rigging and hoisting practices
Implement and document all required project training
Project Management
Supervise and coordinate field workers across one or more trades
Manage daily logs, look-ahead schedules, labor productivity reports, and project filing (G Drive and Procore)
Lead pre-job planning, weekly client meetings, and end-of-project critiques
Develop and manage execution plans for self-perform work (millwright, structural steel, concrete, etc.)
Manage subcontractor activities including weekly coordination meetings
Maintain up-to-date drawings, indirect/equipment schedules, and site warehousing
Oversee material procurement and site equipment maintenance
Prepare and manage project hiring plan; conduct annual reviews for foremen and general foremen
Coordinate start-up activities and support project close-out
