Job Overview
This position will be hybrid, requiring in-office work 3 days per week (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays). Mondays and Fridays offer flexibility to work remotely, with occasional additional in-office days as business needs dictate. The role also requires availability for evening business events.
A reporter for Pacific Business News must be competitive, nimble, and driven to break news about the most important industries, companies, and people in Hawaii. Reporters are expected to write and report short‑form and long‑form stories for the website each day and for the weekly print edition. The ideal candidate blends traditional journalism skills—source building, sharp news judgment, interviewing prowess, and scoop‑driven reporting—with online and social media know‑how. Reporters also produce multimedia components such as photos, slideshows, and video to enhance stories and engage our audience.
Responsibilities
Consistently produce newsy, engaging daily online content for the website and daily email newsletters.
Own beats, dictate day‑to‑day coverage, and thrive on digging out source‑driven exclusives.
Balance high storytelling, reporting, and writing standards with ambitious traffic and engagement objectives.
Relentlessly develop sources and manage relationships with high‑level executives and community leaders.
Scoop competitors on every significant story, providing context, analysis, and insight.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience in journalism.
Desire and ability to break news and identify newsworthy events and sources.
Strong analytical and investigative‑interviewing skills.
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
Comfortable interacting with a wide range of people in person, on the phone, and online.
Clear drive to develop sources and build audience.
Solid understanding of news writing, journalistic ethics, and story structure.
Ability to leverage relationships with sources to deliver differentiated content.
Multimedia skills, including video, photos, broadcast, and on‑camera work.
Proficiency with MS Office products.
Proficiency with web‑based communication platforms (Teams, Zoom, Webex, etc.).
