We have been retained by a special water district in South Denver to recruit a Director of Finance & Accounting - a senior leadership role with real impact on the community and the future of sustainable water infrastructure.
This district was formed to deliver renewable water resources and centralized wastewater services, and it is actively building an integrated system designed for both short and long-term efficiency through thoughtful planning and smart use of technology. This is an opportunity to step into a highly visible role and help shape the financial foundation of a growing, mission-driven organization.
The Role Reporting to the General Manager, the Director of Finance & Accounting will be a key member of the senior management team, partnering with internal leaders, external stakeholders, and a diverse Board of Directors made up of elected and appointed members from operations, engineering, and customer service backgrounds.
This role requires someone who can balance technical rigor with diplomacy - someone comfortable navigating strong personalities, knowing when to push back, and understanding how to work the system to get things done.
Key Responsibilities
Cash management and overall financial operations
Accounting oversight and financial statement preparation
Budget development and ongoing financial planning
Short and long‑term financial forecasting
Capital asset planning and debt management (including bonds)
Audit coordination and financial compliance
Rate studies and financial modeling
Board and financial committee reporting and presentations
What They're Looking For
A strong foundation in finance, accounting, and business operations
Ability to analyze financial trends and translate them into actionable insights
Experience working with Boards and senior leadership teams
Comfort operating in a public‑facing or regulated environment
Strong Microsoft Excel skills; current systems that include QuickBooks
MBA and /or CPA strongly preferredBackground in a special district, public utility, water, sanitation, or liquid utilities environment is highly desirable
