Overview

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES Leads the maintenance of the golf course. Leads the repair of golf course maintenance equipment. Provides professional advice, opinions, assistance and services to the facility’s Director of Golf and Parks Superintendent. Organizational Relationships

Reports to: Director of Parks and Recreation/Golf Course. In his absence, report to Parks Superintendent. Directs: Assistant Golf Course Superintendent; indirectly supervises and determines priorities of maintenance crew members. Other: Daily contact with other departmental employees, vendors, and the general public. Play on the Golf Course will be determined by the Golf Course Superintendent after consulting with the Golf Course Director regarding the condition of the Golf Course. In all instances, the golf course superintendent coordinates operations with the Director of Parks and Recreation/GC and the Parks Superintendent. Examples of Work / Essential Duties

Manages and supervises departmental personnel, including assigning and reviewing work, evaluating performance, and making recommendations on hiring, firing, and disciplining. Supervises maintenance crew in maintaining the golf course in a neat manner, including mowing and watering the grass and spraying pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides; assist, if needed. Oversees and performs required maintenance and repairs on the course, including repairing the irrigation system and performing electrical, mechanical, welding, and plumbing repairs. Assists in developing and implementing construction and improvement projects. Supervises the maintenance of the course, including inspecting the grounds and coordinating necessary repairs. Operates heavy and light equipment in the maintenance and repair of the golf course, including fairway mowing tractor, rough mower, reel sharpener, and pesticide spray unit. Maintains timesheets and leave records of departmental employees and prepares required reports; and orders materials and equipment as needed. Other Important Duties: Acts as 24-hour supervisor of the golf course and is on call for any problems 24 hours a day; turns on irrigation system when necessary due to lack of rain and provides on-site supervision; performs other related duties as may be assigned. Typical Functions

The golf course superintendent assumes responsibility for managing and maintaining golf course properties, which may include the golf course, maintenance equipment (barn), clubhouse grounds and landscaping, open spaces, wooded areas, unused acreage, and tournament room. Additional Functions

Prepares the annual budget for the maintenance and capital improvement of course properties. Formulates annual budgets to implement long-range plans and defined maintenance standards, and aligns with Parks and Recreation policies. Interviews, hires, trains and supervises staff for property maintenance. Has authority to terminate subordinates. Plans all maintenance and project work using agronomic and administrative expertise to achieve maintenance standards and long-range goals. Oversees scheduling and routing of personnel and equipment to accomplish the work. Frequently inspects the golf course and related areas to evaluate management standards and implement changes in programs. Responsible for inventory control and oversees equipment maintenance programs. Approves expenditures and exercises cost control to align operating and capital expenses with approved budgets. Keeps accurate records on payroll, inventory, weather data, maintenance procedures, pesticide applications, etc. Communicates regularly with other supervisors/foremen to discuss activities, goals, plans and member/customer input. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of: golf course management and maintenance; agronomy techniques and principles; safe application and use of chemical pesticides; and supervisory techniques. Skill/Ability to: operate light and heavy equipment; supervise and motivate employees; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; perform electric, plumbing, and welding repairs; tolerate outside working conditions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, vendors, and the general public; maintain relevant certifications and a Texas driver’s license with a good driving record. Employment Standards

Advance knowledge of agronomy and turfgrass management; working knowledge of golf facility construction; understanding of golf rules and strategies. High degree of administrative and executive ability, especially in problem solving and decision making. Proficiency in computer use, including Microsoft Office and other applications. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Knowledge of federal, state and local laws and regulations affecting golf course management (employment, safety, environmental standards). Participation in continuing education opportunities such as seminars, workshops, and field days. May require current state pesticide applicator certification. Acceptable Training and Experience / Certificates and Licenses

Bachelor’s degree in agriculture, agronomy, or related field, plus at least two years of golf course operations supervisory experience. Alternatively, high school diploma or equivalent plus at least six years of golf course maintenance supervisory experience. Or any equivalent combination of experience and training providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Noncommercial pesticide applicator’s license from the Texas Department of Agriculture (preferred). Education / Experience

2-4 years turfgrass management; bachelor’s degree focusing on turfgrass/agronomy with 5 years’ experience as a superintendent. Applicants should have a proven history of exceptional golfing conditions, managing greens to USGA standards, pest control knowledge, irrigation management, leadership, staff development, and budgeting capabilities. Required qualifications also include: valid driver’s license; high school graduation or equivalent plus experience in repairing or maintaining small mechanical/electrical motors; knowledge of golf course management and agronomy; ability to meet licensing/certification requirements as applicable.
