General Description
The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is looking for a full‑time Construction & Field Survey Specialist in the historic western town of Sheridan, Wyoming. In this role you will work under limited supervision to perform tasks that support the preliminary designs and construction of highway projects. Your work will directly shape the roads that connect Wyoming’s communities and landscapes.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Perform various tasks, including surveys, testing, and inspections on preliminary designs and the construction of highway projects.
Responsible for minor construction projects.
Observe, monitor, and oversee highway and related construction performed by contractors.
Field‑test materials, compare work against specifications, and confer with contractors, engineers, and work crews.
Review highway design plans to verify existing utilities, identify conflicts, and contact utility companies.
Prepare project documentation, pay estimates, and final contract documents.
Verify and document work activities.
Regularly monitor, inspect work, and calculate contractor payments.
Maintain crew diaries and logs to support departmental record‑keeping and contract administration.
Ensure proper material sampling and testing; audit material summaries for QA/QC.
Assist in preparing recommendations used to design construction projects.
Anticipate potential problems prior to contracting.
Check preliminary plans for errors and problems.
Communicate internally and externally regarding project information and courses of action.
Research land ownership and contact landowners to secure permission for surveys.
Prepare and check documentation for the district’s final office.
Oversee minor to complex construction projects by documenting pay quantities, coordinating work schedules of subordinates, and working with contractors for quality control.
Prepare and update reports as needed.
Assist and support the District Land Surveyor and the district administrative personnel.
Qualifications – Preferences / Agency Requirements Preference may be given to applicants with 2 to 4 years of progressive experience in roadway construction methods, contract administration, survey experience, and material testing.
Must be able to obtain the following certifications/licenses:
Valid Driver’s License
Defensive Driving
QC/QA Certification in Soils & Aggregate, Asphalt, and Concrete
Asphalt Concrete, Soil & Aggregate
WYDOT Portland Cement Concrete
AASHTO Certification
Knowledge
Project coordination and monitoring
Construction trades and practices
Microsoft Word and Excel
Engineering computations/formulas
Construction inspection, interpretation of plans and specifications
Project record documentation

Computer calculations and calculator usage
Surveying methods, equipment, and file handling

Minimum Qualifications Education & Experience Substitution:
2–4 years of progressive work experience (typically in Construction and Field Surveying) with knowledge equivalent to a Construction and Field Survey Technician.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
None required.
Associate’s Degree
preferred.
Experience:
0–2 years of progressive work experience (typically in Construction and Field Surveying) with knowledge equivalent to a Construction and Field Survey Technician.
Physical Working Conditions
Potentially exposed to hazardous waste and biological waste.
Work around high‑speed traffic and heavy construction equipment.
Work outdoors extensively in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, snow, and wet.
Must be physically able to bend, stoop, and lift up to fifty pounds; stand for long periods.
Must be available to work Monday through Saturday during the construction season.
Occasional overnight travel required.
