The Sacramento OBSERVER is an award-winning legacy Black‑owned and Black‑led news organization serving California’s Black community since 1962. We are expanding and launching a newsroom in Stockton to address critical gaps in coverage and ensure the city’s Black community is reflected fully, accurately, and consistently in local media. We are seeking a full‑time General Assignment Reporter to cover Stockton through a community‑centered lens that balances accountability reporting with stories that highlight culture, achievement, resilience, and joy.

About the Position The General Assignment Reporter will report and produce written and video journalism that reflects the full spectrum of Black life in Stockton. Community members have shared a desire for coverage that goes beyond moments of crisis. This role will provide context and accountability while also elevating student success, community celebrations, Black‑owned businesses, and cultural life. This is a community‑rooted role for a reporter who is comfortable in the field, on camera, and in conversation with Stockton residents.

Responsibilities

Report, write, and produce short‑ and long‑form stories focused on Stockton.

Cover issues including health care access, youth and education, public safety, housing, environmental justice, and civic engagement.

Intentionally pursue stories that highlight Black joy, achievement, and community life.

Appear on camera for video storytelling, interviews, explainers, and event coverage.

Attend and cover both civic meetings and community events.

Develop and maintain strong relationships with community sources.

Publish content using the OBSERVER’s CMS and contribute to social and digital platforms.

Use digital tools, including AI‑assisted reporting and production tools, responsibly and ethically.

Qualifications

Must reside in the greater Stockton area.

2–5 years of reporting or multimedia journalism experience (community journalism preferred).

Strong writing, interviewing, and storytelling skills.

Comfort and confidence appearing on camera.

Photography skills preferred; ability to capture compelling images at community events and in the field.

Ability to report with cultural competency, nuance, and care.

Experience with or willingness to learn CMS platforms, social media publishing, and basic video workflows.

Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
