The

Indirect Tax Manager

is responsible for overseeing U.S. indirect tax and property tax compliance, governance, technology, and risk management for a business that combines project-based work and recurring service operations. This individual contributor role requires strong technical expertise, excellent communication skills, and the ability to influence cross‑functional stakeholders across Finance, Accounting, Sales, Service Operations, IT, and Legal.

The ideal candidate thrives in a complex environment, manages competing priorities, and drives scalable, system‑based tax solutions.

Key Responsibilities Indirect Tax Compliance

Manage end‑to‑end sales and use tax compliance across state, city, and county jurisdictions.

Oversee tax obligations related to project installations, modernization work, maintenance, repairs, parts, service agreements, and digital transactions.

Review and approve monthly and periodic return filings.

Support month‑end close activities, including reconciliations of indirect tax accounts and variance analysis.

Ensure accurate tax treatment for bundled offerings, mixed supplies, contract billing, and multijurisdictional service delivery.

Property Tax

Review personal property tax filings and ensure compliance across relevant jurisdictions.

Lead efforts to modernize filing processes, transitioning from manual to electronic systems.

Strengthen documentation, retention, and internal controls related to property tax.

Tax Technology & Systems

Serve as the primary owner of the enterprise tax engine, including configuration, updates, and testing.

Support ERP and billing system integrations impacting tax calculation.

Manage external technology partners and oversee issue resolution.

Recommend enhancements to systems and processes to improve accuracy and compliance.

Exemptions, Refunds & Reverse Audits

Oversee exemption certificate collection, validation, and governance.

Identify refund opportunities and lead reverse audit efforts.

Serve as a point of contact for customer and vendor tax‑related inquiries.

Audits & Controversy

Lead state and local audit engagements, from initial data gathering through negotiation and resolution.

Coordinate responses to tax authority requests and internal stakeholder needs.

Conduct root‑cause analysis of findings and implement corrective actions.

Monitoring, Advisory & Planning

Monitor changes in tax legislation and assess business impact.

Provide practical guidance on tax implications for new services, pricing models, and contract structures.

Identify opportunities for process improvements, tax efficiency, and risk mitigation.

Governance, Controls & Training

Maintain and enhance internal controls for indirect and property tax.

Develop monitoring procedures, documentation standards, and compliance controls.

Provide training and guidance to internal teams to promote consistent tax application.

1099 Oversight

Oversee and review 1099 reporting processes executed by Finance.

Ensure accuracy, timely filing, and clear process ownership.

Requirements

8-10+ years of U.S. indirect tax experience (sales and use tax).

Experience supporting service‑based, field‑based, or project‑driven business models.

Hands‑on experience with an enterprise tax engine and ERP systems.

Strong understanding of tax controls, risk management, and operational tax processes.

Ability to influence cross‑functional teams without direct authority.

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Tax, or a related field.

Preferred

Property tax experience.

CPA, JD, MST, or other advanced credential.

Experience leading audits and driving system‑based tax solutions.
