GENERAL DESCRIPTION This is a truly unique opportunity at a special site—20,000 acres of rugged and undeveloped land on the cleanest river in Texas. The position is based at the remote Del Norte Unit of Devils River State Natural Area located on Dolan Creek Rd; which is approximately 1.5 hours (one-way) from Del Rio. Staff should be comfortable operating kayaks and canoes, including overnight kayak patrols down the Devils River to conduct river/campsite maintenance. Under the direction of the Lead Maintenance Specialist and Park Superintendent, this position performs complex (journey‑level) building maintenance and construction work. Responsible for the daily operation, maintenance, and repair of facilities, grounds, and equipment at Devils River State Natural Area. Performs daily routine maintenance and cleaning of facilities and grounds. Operates and maintains various types of equipment including hand tools, power tools, mowers, tractors, and trucks. Duties include but are not limited to mowing, trimming, garbage collection, cleaning restrooms, carpentry, plumbing, mechanical repairs, vehicle maintenance and road maintenance. Assists with enforcing park rules, purchasing supplies and materials and with interpretive programs/special events. Performs basic administrative duties and provides a high degree of customer service. Provides leadership to volunteer staff. Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division and Branch rules, regulations and procedures. NOTE: Required to live on‑site in state housing with a monthly deduction.
QUALIFICATIONS Minimum Qualifications Education: Graduation from high school or GED. Experience: Three years facility, equipment or grounds maintenance experience. Licensure: If driving is required applicant must possess a valid state driver’s license.
Acceptable Substitutions Experience: Thirty semester hours from an accredited college or university may substitute for one year of the required experience, with a maximum substitution of two years.
Preferred Qualifications
Six months experience as a team lead or supervisor.
Experience with a wide range of construction, repair, and/or maintenance‑related field projects.
Experience in customer service and/or public relations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of basic plumbing, carpentry, electrical, janitorial and making minor repairs to park facilities.
Knowledge of park operations and maintenance practices.
Knowledge of general custodial duties.
Knowledge of basic mathematics.
Skill in using MS Word, Excel and Outlook.
Skill in effective verbal and written communication.
Skill in applying worker safety programs to work situations.
Skill in performing minor repairs to vehicles and other equipment.
Skill meeting deadlines.
Skill in providing quality customer service in a courteous and professional manner.
Skill in establishing and maintaining effective work relationships with co‑workers and work-related contacts.
