The Oregon Convention Center (OCC) and Portland Expo Center (Expo) are looking for a Communications and Engagement Specialist to support organization-wide communications and culture‑building efforts. This role is ideal for a thoughtful communicator who enjoys translating complex information into clear, accessible messaging and who is energized by connecting people to shared purpose.

Working within the Equity, Culture, and Communications division, this position helps ensure staff, partners and the public receive timely, consistent information that reflects shared values, strengthens trust and supports alignment across teams. If you enjoy writing, digital content, storytelling, collaboration and working in a mission‑driven public environment, this role offers the opportunity to contribute to large‑scale venues that serve the entire region.

As the Communications and Engagement Specialist, you will

Manage and maintain social media channels, including planning, drafting, scheduling, and publishing content.

Produce and coordinate the employee newsletter, gathering stories across divisions, and managing publication timelines.

Draft, edit and proofread internal and external communications, including website content, presentations, announcements, and informational materials.

Support executive and departmental messaging through presentation development, talking points, and written summaries.

Update and maintain website content to ensure information is accurate, accessible, and aligned with brand standards.

Support employee engagement initiatives by promoting culture‑building events, celebrating accomplishments, and reinforcing shared values.

Collaborate across departments to elevate employee stories, partnerships, and public benefit messaging.

Apply inclusive communication and accessibility best practices in digital and written content.

Track communications calendars, monitor engagement metrics, and support continuous improvement efforts.

Minimum qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing, English, digital media or a closely related field; and

Two (2) years of professional‑level experience supporting communications work such as content development, internal or external communications, digital communications or social media management; or

Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of the position.

Hybrid Telework This position is designated as “hybrid telework.” You will be required to work onsite and at times have the option to work away from your assigned work location. The specific schedule and balance of onsite and telework will be discussed with the hiring manager at the time of offer. Employees must reside in Oregon or Washington to work at Metro. Please note, the designation of hybrid telework may be subject to change at a future time.

Like to have qualifications You do not need to have the following preferred qualifications/transferable skills to qualify. However, keep in mind we may consider them when identifying the most qualified candidates. Your transferable skills are any skills you have gained through education, work experience, including the military, or life experience that are relevant for this position.

Experience working in a public‑sector environment.

Experience using content management systems and analytics tools.

Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office tools.

Experience supporting employee engagement or internal culture initiatives.

Knowledge of digital accessibility standards such as WCAG 2.2 AA.

COMPENSATION, BENEFITS AND REPRESENTATON The full‑salary range for this position is step 1: $71,583.17 to step 7: $95,992.34 annually. However, unless a candidate’s qualifications justify, based on the Oregon Pay Equity Act requirements and Metro’s internal equity review process, the appointment will likely be made between step 1: $71,583.17 to the equity range step 3: $78,886.70 annually.

This position is not eligible for overtime and is represented by AFCSME union. It is classified as an Associate Public Affairs Specialist.
