R26-862The Director, Claims provides strategic and operational Claim leadership for the assigned territory, including the execution of industry best practices for claims handling and all related case management. The Director assures claim performance is sound both technically and financially, including the leadership of case reserving practices and performance as well as develops plans for achieving corporate goals and objectives. This position leads knowledge sharing and interactions with other departments related to claims.The Director, Claims will direct claim management staff in their respective roles overseeing activities of staff involved in the accurate, efficient and equitable disposition of claims and losses as well as the administrative responsibilities of the claims department.
In addition, the position will partner directly with the Vice President, Claims to collaborate and coordinate departmental policies and procedures pertaining to claims management and departmental operations.**Essential Duties & Responsibilities*** Direct and oversee claim management staff to ensure business functions within their respective units (ie: claim management, litigation management, administrative, reporting) operate within departmental guidelines and regulatory requirements.* Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.* Coordinate and collaborate with V.P. and claim management staff in creating and updating of departmental policies and procedures.* Participate in the development and execution of departmental objectives and strategies.* Communicate department objectives, policies, procedures and plans to staff to ensure efficient and effective operation.* Participate in claim file audits to ensure claims handling and reserving standards are met by management staff.* Assist in preparation and monitoring of departmental budget.* Remain current in local, state, and federal changes that impact claims pertaining to Coverys lines of coverage and territories.* Interact regularly with peers in key business units such as Risk Management, Business Development, and Underwriting to ensure overall business/strategy goals are met.* Serve as member of the Reserve and Settlement committee which manages appropriate levels of reserving and settlement authority for cases.* Guide, support, and mentor staff in their decisions impacting individual claim decisions.* Overnight travel is required of this position - up to 5% travel may be expected.**Education, Requirements & Competencies*** Bachelor’s degree from a four year college or university* 5-10 years management experience in medical professional liability claims and litigation management.* General knowledge and experience in insurance, law and medicine is strongly desired.* Strong communication skills and ability to successfully lead teams is required.* Ability to build relationships with both internal and external business partners.* Advanced analytical and decision-making skills.* Must be able to travel as applicable.*The base salary range is $168*,700 *- $228,300.
