Summary:

Position requires incumbent to work as part of a small team or individually to splice and maintain fiber routes.

Qualification Requirements

Must have High school diploma or equivalent

1 year of fiber installation experience with ability to take direction and learn from experience

OTDR experience preferred

Must have a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record to operate a company vehicle

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Ability to troubleshoot damaged fiber, effectively and efficiently

Ability to read, understand, and update splice documentation and maps as required

Knowledge of applicable electronic equipment and specialty tools

Knowledge of basic computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Adobe Acrobat Pro

Ability to read blueprints

Ability to work independently as well as in a team

Ability to analyze and solve problems

Ability to use and take care of hand tools and mechanical equipment

Ability and interest in performing work in the field

Demonstrated willingness to learn

Physical ability to lift 75+lbs. and be comfortable working in an outdoor environment in all types of weather

Ability to maintain an effective working relationship with other employees and the general public

Ability to travel for extended periods of time (travel required is 50% to include overnight).

Ability to be covered by company auto insurance plan

Supervisory Responsibilities This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Essential Functions

Terminate, splice, and install a variety of fiber optic connectors and enclosures including both loose tube fiber and ribbon fiber

Proficient in fiber color codes, in using fiber tools and fiber optic test equipment including fusion splicer, power meter, and OTDR

Climb and use ladders on poles for accessing aerial fiber plant

Perform aerial construction activities such as installing aerial fiber and fiber storage (snow shoes)

Perform underground construction activities, including but not limited to, pulling new cable/fiber through short conduits, opening underground vaults or pedestals making minor repairs if required.

Complete production reports

Dig holes, work with hand tools, restore landscaping

Lay fiber innerduct and pull fiber through existing ducts

Operate heavy equipment and excavation truck

Operate pipe and cable locators and mark underground utilities

Measure and record installed quantities of fiber

Assist on overall job including all tasks required to build and install a site per customer specifications

Maintain clean, orderly environment adhering to company policies and industry regulation/standard(s) (OSHA)

Physical Demands While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to be at site locations both on the ground and on building roof tops, sit, stand, walk, use both hands, and reach and raise items above the head, use fingers to feel and handle, talk and hear. While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently is required to stoop, kneel and crouch, lift weight or exert a force of 75+ or more pounds.

Work Environment Most work is performed externally, on-site, outdoors, with exposure to the elements of nature working under normal construction conditions. 95% of travel is required in support of this position. Approximately 5% performed in climate-controlled internal office environment working under normal office conditions. Night and weekend work may be required up to 25% of the time.
