Overview
The Business Development and Marketing Manager is a key member of the Marketing Department. The Manager serves as a liaison to one or more practice and/or industry groups, working with group leaders and partners to develop and execute strategies and marketing initiatives aligned with business development and client service goals. The Manager learns the service offerings, lawyers, and clients of the assigned groups, and leads initiatives to deepen knowledge about clients, their business needs, and Sidley capabilities to foster cross-selling. They may supervise Business Development and Marketing Specialist and/or Coordinator level professionals, mentor junior team members, and build strong working relationships within the Marketing Department and with other professional functions and lawyers across the Firm’s global platform. Duties and Responsibilities
Practice and Client Development Consult with practice/industry leaders and partners to develop and execute marketing and client development plans for the group and individual lawyers Attend and contribute to practice/industry group meetings and planning sessions Identify and recommend business development opportunities and trends using data analytics, competitive intelligence, industry trends, market analyses, and similar resources Evaluate development of business prospects and cross-marketing efforts and make recommendations to practice/industry leaders Manage, develop, and refine the groups' business development infrastructure (e.g., collateral, experience databases, matter lists, contact lists, opportunity tracking), ensuring materials are consistent, accurate, and up to date; optimize use of technology and resources Help group leaders prepare and manage the group’s BD budget; track and analyze initiatives and ROI to inform future planning Coordinate with Market Intelligence to conduct industry and client research for practice development Facilitate planning, implementation, and follow-up of new business or cross-marketing opportunities Onboard and integrate lateral hires in the practice/industry with regional marketing teams Proposals and Pitches Serve as project manager and key contributor for RFPs, pitches, and other BD projects for primary groups and others as needed Lead briefing discussions to propose and understand opportunities Write new business proposals and tailored responses to RFIs/RFPs Advise on preparing and rehearsing pitch teams Support follow-up and debrief activities post-pitch and report outcomes to Firm leaders Marketing and Profile-raising Activities Lead preparation of submissions for practice/industry rankings, awards, surveys, league tables, and other recognitions Collaborate with Regional BD and Marketing to plan client programs and Sidley-sponsored events Work with Communications and PR to identify thought leadership topics and engage Sidley lawyers in media, articles, podcasts, etc. Recommend and facilitate involvement of Firm lawyers in professional organizations to raise visibility Employee Management Participate in hiring, managing, and developing staff; oversee daily operations and monitor work product; manage professional development, goals, coaching, and training; conduct performance appraisals Delegate work effectively to team members Collaborate with other leaders across practices, regions, and functions on cross-practice projects Salaries vary by location and are based on factors including market, skills, experience, and education.
