The UAF Geophysical Institute is seeking a graphic designer/technical illustrator to develop a variety of print and digital communication products. This position works within GI’s Communications/Design Services team using graphic design, digital illustration, art direction, and publishing skills/knowledge to craft visual communication publications/products intended for a variety of diverse, internal and external audiences ranging from K‑12 education outreach to science experts.
Products and publications include, but aren’t limited to: highly technical and scientifically accurate, complex illustrations; data‑driven maps; infographics that translate science concepts; research proposal figures; reports and scientific journal articles; digital presentations; large‑format displays; brochures and information sheets; K‑12 lesson plans; books and booklets; and other publications as needed.

To thrive in this role, the candidate needs to be self‑motivated, able to reliably meet and juggle multiple deadlines, have excellent customer service skills, and work well within a team environment. They will also be comfortable collaborating with faculty and staff, soliciting feedback, and making design changes to meet the needs of the client, federal partners, UAF, and GI. A successful candidate will have advanced skill with Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign, as well as Microsoft PowerPoint and/or Google Slides, and be well versed in meeting accessibility compliance standards.
This position will be physically located at the UAF campus in Fairbanks, Alaska. The successful finalist will be expected to report to duty at the UAF office on the first day of employment.
Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree related to visual communications or equivalent (2 years) professional experience in graphic arts, digital illustration or other relevant field.
Position Details This position is full‑time, Grade 78, term‑funded, non‑exempt, 12‑month position complete with a competitive salary and UA employee benefits package. UA provides a generous compensation package that includes retirement options, annual leave, 12 paid holidays per year, tuition waivers for employees and family members, and affordable medical, dental and vision care coverage. New hires will be placed on the UA staff salary schedule, based on education and experience.
