
Job Description
A formal invitation to the Law Enforcement Testing will be sent to qualifying applicants by e-mail once the application has been received in the Professional Standards Office.
Duties Perform responsible protective services work, which includes:
Enforcing laws, investigating criminal activity, and serving civil papers
Ensuring the safety of the public, testifying in court, and performing related duties
Maintaining records and files, preparing detailed reports, and securing evidence
Operating a patrol vehicle to observe for traffic violations, suspicious activities, or disturbances of law and order
Responding to radio dispatches and answering calls and complaints
Makes arrests, forcibly if necessary, using handcuffs and other restraints
Subdues resisting suspects using weapons, maneuvers, and approved self‑defense methods
Enforces traffic laws and issues citations for traffic violations
Fills out arrest records, takes fingerprints and photographs, performs prisoner security functions, and investigates traffic accidents
Interviews victims and witnesses, secures property, and preserves evidence
Performs related tasks as required
Must be available to work any shift of the day on any day of the week, including weekends and holidays.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Qualifications for this position include:
High school diploma or equivalent and possession of a valid Virginia driver’s license
Knowledge of police methods, practices, and procedures
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to prepare clear, comprehensive reports
Ability to interact courteously, firmly, and tactfully with the public
Analytical skills to assess situations and adopt quick, effective, and reasonable courses of action
Physical agility and endurance, skill in the use of firearms, and operation of a motor vehicle
All qualifications as required by the Code of Virginia, the Department of Criminal Justice Services, and the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office
Must be 21 years of age and a U.S. citizen
Preference will be given to applicants with DCJS Law Enforcement Basic Certification, related work experience, knowledge of Stafford County’s geography, and advanced training or college coursework in law enforcement
Education and Experience The selected candidate will be required to complete a seven-step hiring process that includes written, oral, and medical examinations; polygraph and physical agility tests; psychological evaluation; and background investigation.
Examination Schedule and Notification to Attend Written Test Everyone submitting an application will be required to participate in a written examination. The test will be graded on site and the candidate will be advised of his/her score. A score of seventy‑percent (70%) or above is required to advance in the process. The Sheriff may waive this portion of the selection process in the event of prior police experience or other factors as determined by the Sheriff. Applicants should be prepared to commit approximately 3 hours for this examination.
Valid picture identification is required .
