Departmental Overview The UC Berkeley Center for Consumer Law & Economic Justice, housed at Berkeley Law, works to establish equity and fairness in the marketplace. Through research, advocacy, policy, and teaching, the Center develops and applies robust consumer protection laws, aiming to protect low‑income communities, communities of color, and vulnerable consumers, including immigrants and survivors of domestic violence & elder abuse.

Position Summary The Administration & Communications Associate will join the dynamic team at the UC Berkeley Center for Consumer Law & Economic Justice and manage the Center’s communications—website, social media, reports, podcast series—and general administrative services, including financial processing, program administration, and liaison with campus departments and external partners.

Responsibilities

Communications:

Provide general communications support, assist with producing written, visual, and electronic materials, maintain listservs, implement website updates, administer social media accounts, support projects such as podcast series, video series, newsletters, reports, and resolve technological challenges with IS&T and other departments.

General Administrative Support:

Provide operational and program support, coordinate day‑to‑day operations, serve as administrative point of contact, liaise with multiple campus departments, ensure records are current, direct inquiries beyond scope to appropriate staff, manage institutional memory, and perform additional duties as assigned.

Financial Administration:

Process financial transactions, handle invoices and reimbursements, research vendor issues, recommend suitable vendors, authorize minor expenditures within budgets, assist with travel arrangements, ensure compliance with fiscal requirements, and participate in developing operating procedures.

Event Coordination and Support:

Offer general event support, coordinate logistics for meetings and events, liaise with Business Services Office and Event Services Unit, assist with creating promotional materials, and publicize Center events.

Required Qualifications

Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with staff, students, faculty, alumni, and external partners from diverse backgrounds.

Knowledge of website, finance, accounting, and project management operations.

Solid organizational skills and ability to multitask with demanding timelines.

Excellent computer skills (MS Office, Google Suite, online calendaring, video conference platforms) and ability to learn new systems.

Strong attention to detail.

Ability to collaborate with individuals and groups from varied backgrounds.

Creative problem‑solving skills.

Discretion and confidentiality.

Sound judgment in responding to issues.

Ability to attend occasional evening or weekend events.

Commitment to fostering inclusive and supportive environments.

Prior administrative and/or office management experience.

Bachelor's degree in a related field and/or equivalent experience/training.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in social justice and/or public interest law.

Facility with social media.

Familiarity with web design.

Knowledge of graphic design software (Adobe Suite, Canva, etc.).

Salary & Benefits For information on the comprehensive benefits package offered by the University, please visit the University of California Compensation & Benefits website. Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. The budgeted hourly range is $33.93 (Step 3) – $37.11 (Step 7).

This is a 12‑month, full‑time (40 hours/week), temporary position with the possibility of extension.

This is a non‑exempt, biweekly‑paid position.

Other Information

This position is governed by the terms and conditions in the agreement for the Clerical & Allied Services Unit (CX) between the University of California and Teamsters Local 2010. This is a Limited, 1‑year appointment. Per CX contract, this appointment is not subject to the automatic conversion to career status, as stated in Section B.2., because the position is funded for 18 months or less. In the event the position is funded beyond 18 months, the limited appointee shall be converted to career status retroactive to the first of the month following attainment of 1000 hours.

This is not a visa opportunity. This position does not include sponsorship of a new consular H‑1B visa petition that would require payment of the $100,000 supplemental fee.

This position is eligible for up to 20% hybrid work. Exact arrangements are determined in partnership with your supervisor to meet role responsibilities and department needs, and are subject to change.
