Job Summary San José State University (SJSU) invites applications for the position of Assistant Director of Student Outreach and Recruitment (SOAR). Reporting to the Senior Director of Student Outreach and Recruitment, this role oversees student recruitment initiatives and cultivates strategic partnerships to expand and diversify SJSU’s applicant pool. The Assistant Director plays a key role in advancing enrollment goals by planning, organizing, and executing comprehensive undergraduate recruitment strategies that span the full enrollment lifecycle, from outreach and application through matriculation.

Key Responsibilities

Lead undergraduate recruitment efforts and outreach strategies

Advise prospective students and families on admissions requirements

Plan and participate in recruitment events (on-campus and off-campus)

Oversee admissions application review and decision processes

Supervise and support recruitment staff and student assistants

Collaborate with campus partners to support enrollment goals

Analyze recruitment data and recommend improvements

Ensure compliance with CSU and SJSU policies and deadlines

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Ability to communicate with constituents in a professional and respectful manner

Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive information and communications with students, parents, employees, and external agencies

Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations

Ability to collect, compile, analyze, and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on the data

Ability to use professional judgment to review and assess admissions requirements and documents

Ability to advise potential students, parents, high school, and community college staff individually and in group settings

Knowledge of technology and software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, database management, and communication tools

Ability to perform accurately in a detail-oriented environment

Ability to plan and execute multiple work priorities, organize and plan work and projects

Knowledge of methods, procedures, practices, and activities of the program area; English grammar, business writing, punctuation, spelling, and arithmetic

Ability to compose and appropriately format correspondence and reports

Required Qualifications

Equivalent to graduation from a four‑year college or university in a related field plus upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing and conflict resolution where such are job related

Four (4) years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience which includes experience in advising students individually and in groups, and in analysis and resolution of complex student services problems. A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work or a job‑related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling, guidance or a job‑related field may be substituted for two years of the required professional experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional, personal or career counseling

Preferred Qualifications

Over five (5) years of Student Recruitment Experience in the CSU System

Experience working with all higher education student populations (Freshman, Transfer, International, Non Resident, non‑traditional, student ambassadors, welcome center operations)

Over five (5) years of large scale event planning (on and off campus) and execution

Experience in targeted yield and recruitment planning

Compensation Classification: Student Services Professional IV Anticipated Hiring Range: $6,700/month - $7,084/month CSU Salary Range: $6,320/month - $9,014/month
