
Certified Coding Specialist I

Summary
The Certified Coding Specialist I requires knowledge of and skill in applying the International Classification of Diseases and Procedures (ICD), Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) code sets, and associated Medicare/Medicaid rules and guidelines. The role reviews and interprets patient medical record documentation to identify pertinent diagnoses and procedures, and assigns ICD‑10‑CM and CPT‑4 codes accurately and timely to the highest level of specificity based on physician documentation. Responsibilities include coding ambulatory surgery, special procedure, observation, emergency department, outpatient ancillary, clinic visit records, and a mixture of Evaluation & Management medical records. The specialist assists with coding outpatient ancillary clinic, specialty clinic, surgical, and emergency room records as needed, communicates with physicians and other providers regarding documentation requirements, and collaborates across departments. Continuous learning of coding and documentation changes, rules, and guidelines is essential.

Education & Experience
Requires: CCS or CPC, knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and the disease process.
Ability to work independently and productively with minimal guidance.
Detail‑oriented, organized, flexible, with exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
Demonstrates coding skills and critical thinking in applying current policies and procedures.
Preferred: RHIA or RHIT with one year of continuous full‑time ICD‑10‑CM & CPT‑4 evaluation & management coding.
Knowledge of health insurance processing.
Skilled with electronic medical record applications, automated encoders, and related software.
Hours
Monday to Friday: 8:00 am to 5:00 pm
