Job Description

The Asset Strategy Leader is an experienced and established leader who influences across multiple functions and levels within AbbVie. He or she serves as the matrix leader with overall accountability for an asset from discovery to end of life cycle, guiding the creation and execution of a comprehensive asset strategy and phase‑appropriate brand strategies for one or more assets. This role requires integration of all functional activities relevant to the development, registration, manufacture, and commercialization of the asset, with emphasis on ensuring an integrated strategy across these elements. The Asset Strategy Leader works with governance, functional leaders, and external development partners to advance and optimize the asset’s value consistent with its prioritization in the portfolio. The position is based onsite in Irvine, CA or in North Chicago, IL.

Responsibilities

Chairs the Asset Strategy Team (AST) and serves as the primary point of contact for Pipeline Governance and senior management.

Develops and secures endorsement of an integrated cross‑functional Global Asset Strategy and Brand Strategy, ensuring timely, multidirectional interactions within the Pipeline Operating Model.

Provides asset recommendations in the context of AbbVie’s enterprise objectives.

Manages deliverables, including a functionally aligned Global Asset Strategy and Product Development Plan (PDP), and analyzes emerging data to drive recommendations that highlight opportunities, address risks, and propose mitigations.

Builds collaborative relationships with governance team members and executives to enable optimal interactions with PCM Governance at pre‑specified milestones.

Ensures the AST is resourced, stays within budget, and champions incremental resource requests when appropriate, maintaining alignment with the Target Product Profile, Asset Plan, and PDP.

Validates program viability from scientific and commercial perspectives, developing clear Go/No‑Go decision points and championing the program with objectivity and judgment.

Acts as a strategic advisor to cross‑functional teams, including Global Commercial, Global Brand, CMC, Integrated Evidence Strategy, Value and Access, and Regulatory Strategy.

Ensures alignment with key plan deliverables such as the Integrated Evidence Plan, Regulatory Strategy plans, Brand plans, and Operations LRP plans.

Foster a culture of inclusivity, psychological safety, and empowerment, mentoring team members and maintaining a neutral position in prioritizing actions.

Represents the AST in interactions with external parties—such as Advisory Boards and regulatory engagements—exhibiting executive presence and clear communication across all management levels.

Maintains an up‑to‑date understanding of the competitive environment, assessing potential impacts on ongoing programs and staying informed on industry trends and emerging technologies.

Focuses the team on what matters, asking the right questions and seeking all viewpoints to find the best path forward.

Exceeds expectations in communication.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree required; advanced (Doctoral‑level or MBA) degree highly preferred.

10+ years of leadership experience in a pharmaceutical/biotech commercial, R&D, regulatory, or operations setting; deep expertise in drug development and/or commercialization across multiple therapy areas and development phases.

High‑level strategic thinking, leadership, and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to apply new knowledge to asset strategy and enterprise priorities.

Experience with multiple device product development, particularly in facial aesthetics programs.

Experience following a single asset and associated brands through all phases of development and commercialization.

Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate, and elicit top performance from cross‑functional teams in a global, matrixed environment.

Judgment and pragmatism to design solutions for complex cross‑functional problems and make informed decisions in the face of uncertainty.

Excellent communication with and influence over senior executives.

Deep understanding of the drug commercialization lifecycle and ability to assimilate new knowledge rapidly.

Expertise in the strategy and execution of drug commercialization—including R&D, regulatory, commercial, and manufacturing aspects.

The compensation range described below is the range of possible base pay that the Company believes in good faith it will pay for this role at the time of this posting based on the job grade. Individual compensation paid within this range may vary by geographic location and other factors.
