Locksmith (Skilled Trade Specialist II)

located in the Office of Facilities Maintenance at BWI Marshall Airport, Anne Arundel County, MD.

Job Summary A full‑time essential employee responsible for maintaining, installing, and repairing an assortment of locking systems, door closures, and locking devices. The incumbent operates key cutting equipment, hand tools, and other state‑owned equipment, uses motorized equipment, moves physical objects, and maintains digital and physical records. Work is performed in accordance with all applicable local, state, and federal regulations and standard practices governing the locksmith trade.

Responsibilities

Maintain, install, and repair lock systems, door closures, and locking devices.

Operate key cutting equipment, hand tools, and other state‑owned equipment.

Operate motorized equipment and move physical objects as needed.

Maintain accurate digital and physical records of work performed.

Respond to emergency call‑back procedures and work 24 hours a day, including rotating shifts, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays as required.

Qualifications

High school graduation or equivalent certificate.

Three (3) years of locksmith experience.

Additional experience in skilled trades may substitute for required education (1 year per year of experience). A vocational‑technical certificate in a skilled trade may substitute one year of general experience.

Military service experience in utilities repair or construction/engineering specialties may substitute for experience on a year‑for‑year basis.

Licenses & Certifications

Valid Maryland motor vehicle operator’s license; license number and expiration date must be listed on the application.

Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License may be required during probation, depending on equipment operated.

Airfield Operators Permit required prior to permanent appointment, per Maryland regulations.

Additional agency training and certification may be required for permanent status.

Special Requirements

Extensive pre‑employment security background check required by FAA and federal regulation.

Readiness to work at any hour of day or night and be subject to call‑in.

Maintain reliable communication link for emergency call‑back.

Medical testing and hazardous materials training may be required; respirator may be worn.

Demonstrated ability to perform maintenance on high structures and in cramped quarters.

Sign and agree to essential employee status policies.

Pre‑employment drug and substance abuse testing required.
