
Minimum Qualifications
Juris Doctorate Degree required. One year of experience in criminal justice or legal field. Must possess and maintain a valid State Bar of Georgia license and a valid driver’s license.
Specific Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Proficiency in performing essential functions; ability to learn, comprehend, and apply county or departmental policies, practices, and procedures; knowledge of federal, state, and local criminal laws; familiarity with court policies and techniques related to the assignment area.
Purpose of Classification Provide competent and zealous legal representation and advocacy to indigent clients of Fulton County, performing beginning‑level professional legal work and assisting in routine‑complexity cases.
Essential Functions
Represent clients in court at various stages of cases—including arraignments, preliminary and pretrial hearings, probation and sentencing, post‑adjudication/post‑conviction hearings, appeals, and related courtroom proceedings—by negotiating, preparing and arguing motions, conducting jury selection, making opening and closing statements, presenting evidence, questioning witnesses, and making objections.
Investigate and prepare cases for hearings and trials: review discovery; interview clients in and out of custody; request and inspect records and evidence; review criminal histories; prepare graphics and exhibits; explore alternative explanations; follow up on defense leads; identify and interview witnesses and alibis; observe crime scenes; subpoena witnesses and prepare them for trial; determine need for, procure, and interview expert witnesses; assess need for psychological/psychiatric evaluation; anticipate legal issues; develop defense theory and case strategies.
Represent clients at pre‑trial conferences to secure and argue mitigating evidence; negotiate resolutions with assistant district attorneys; and advise clients regarding plea offers.
Coordinate post‑adjudication/disposition/conviction follow‑up and relief: secure mitigating evidence for sentencing or restitution; review court orders and case plans; file related requests, motions, and appeals; advocate for client; secure additional services for client.
Conduct case research and documentation: research relevant case law; interpret in relation to case facts; research terms, procedures, or science from other fields that may be relevant; prepare briefs, motions, and responses; write case summaries; draft jury charges; take trial notes.
Communicate with, advise, and advocate for indigent clients: develop a trusting and supportive attorney‑client relationship; explain and advise clients regarding rights, investigative and judicial process, and alternative courses of action; provide updates regarding case status.
Manage caseload: attend scheduled court appearances; create new case files, input and record case‑related data and notes, log case activities, and close files; receive and review calendars; coordinate with court administration, clients, witnesses, experts, and others.
Maintain and upgrade knowledge in appropriate legal fields: attend conferences, seminars, meetings, and training events; keep abreast of legal changes; participate in professional organizations.
Communicate with prosecuting attorneys, judges, investigators, legal support staff, witnesses, experts, translators, client friends and family, probation officers, supervisors, government officials, other employees, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status, present or exchange information, provide legal counsel and interpretation, or resolve problems.
Process a variety of documentation associated with department/division operations within designated timeframes and per established procedures: receive and review police reports, witness statements, laboratory reports, criminal histories, defense motions, and case law updates; complete, forward, or retain documents as appropriate; prepare various forms, reports, correspondence, and other documentation; compile data for department reports; maintain computerized and/or hardcopy records.
Additional Functions Perform other related duties as required.
