Background

Blue Meridian Partners is a pioneering philanthropic model for finding and funding scalable solutions to problems that trap America’s young people and families in poverty and limit economic mobility. We bring philanthropists together to make significant, multi-year investments that make it possible for social sector leaders to take their successful interventions to regional or national scale.

Today, Blue Meridian is evolving and extending its early vision for integrating the work of expanding solutions nationwide with regional and local strategies to produce the strongest possible outcomes for children and families. We are deeply aware of a growing body of research that highlights how place and economic mobility are inextricably linked and pervasive racial gaps in outcomes. We believe more cross-sector solutions are required to realize the potential of compounding benefits of coordinated work in communities.

In response to the needs identified by community leaders and a study of the challenges that seem to have stymied prior efforts, Blue Meridian is assembling a team to unlock significant new private and public resources for practitioners in order to accelerate place-based work across the country.

Position Profile

Managing Directors provide strategic leadership and help execute and innovate on critical business priorities for Blue Meridian Partners, including sourcing and leading Blue Meridian’s relationships with select investees.

Managing Directors are members of a dynamic leadership team. Operating with great flexibility and freedom while working closely with other Managing Directors, the CEO and Chief Investment and Impact Officer (CIIO), as well as Blue Meridian’s investment Partners they provide the leadership necessary to advance Blue Meridian’s mission.

Reporting to the CIIO, the Managing Director of the Enabling Strategies portfolio will refine and launch this new portfolio as a part of the team focused on the next generation of Blue Meridian’s regional investment strategy.

Primary Responsibilities

The Managing Director will oversee and manage, delegating and working with other team members where appropriate, activities that may include but are not limited to the following:

Lead Strategy and Investments

Partner with the CIIO to refine and continuously improve the Enabling Strategies elements of Blue Meridian Partners’ regional investment strategy.
Co-develop an outcomes framework and own, and deliver on strategic outcomes related to investments in enabling supports and strategies including outcomes related to the progress in place-based efforts served.
Source, conduct and manage due diligence to explore opportunities and make investment recommendations, developing, with team, compelling and feasible investment recommendations.
Manage the Enabling Strategies portfolio of investments overseeing and supporting their impact and performance.
Capture ongoing learning from investments and broader trends to continuously inform and improve Blue Meridian’s and investees’ strategy and operations.
Serve as an external spokesperson/representative of Blue Meridian and assist as needed with fundraising, BMP Partner engagement, and other activities.
Develop relationships and partnerships with other relevant investors and aligned organizations to increase information flow and sourcing, leverage additional expertise or resources, and extend the reach and impact of the portfolio and strategy.

Lead Relationships with Investees

Ensure investee leaders and their teams receive excellent relationship management and support from Blue Meridian.
Earn and maintain the respect of investees and serve as a trusted partner and advisor to their CEOs and boards. This includes representing Blue Meridian Partners with investee boards and advising on strategy and scaling plans; evaluation and evidence building; board development; fundraising; organizational design; and human capital and communications.
Develop and implement creative scaling strategies and plans. Craft performance milestones with investees and chart a roadmap to success.
Develop and present regular progress reports to the Blue Meridian board and other Partners. Review and approve materials and talking points for Partner updates.
Design and facilitate investee meetings, strategy sessions and performance reviews.
Identify advisors, consultants and other resources to ensure robust support for investees.

Qualifications

Manage and Develop Process for Team Operations

The MD/Senior Director will drive strategy implementation including all team coordination, integration, and strategic process for a highly complex innovative portfolio of work. With the oversight and guidance of senior leaders, the MD/Senior Director will lead and contribute to activities including:

Partner in strategy development and drive strategy implementation, managing a complex set of workstreams and underlying activities across ensuring coherence, rigor and timeliness of execution with a focus on achieving maximum impact while building and maintaining a strong team culture anchored on core values.
Ensure seamless integration with the overall Blue Meridian organization leveraging shared services and ensuring shared learning and other synergies are realized. Specifically, act as point of integration for Blue Meridian staff – including ongoing tight partnership with Communications, Finance, HR, other key leaders and the CEO’s Office.
Lead implementation and continuous improvement of core processes including investing, measurement and evaluation, knowledge management, and internal and external communication.
Cultivate a strong team culture grounded in agreed upon core values and guiding principles and reinforced by processes, systems, and norms such as collaboration, establishing and managing team meeting agendas and norms, and launching team events, delegating where appropriate.
Oversee the production of quarterly performance reports, capturing current performance, risks, and future potential. Contribute to the preparation of materials and talking points for Partner updates.
Manage financial plans and budgets for area of responsibility.

Drive Strategic Initiatives and Field Collaboration

Support initial strategy development in key areas.
Design, in partnership with the team, key meetings with prominent field leaders, delegating where appropriate.
Ensure leaders in the field and their teams receive excellent relationship management and support from Blue Meridian. Earn and maintain the respect of investees and be a trusted point of contact and advisor.

Managing Directors provide strategic leadership and help execute and innovate on critical business priorities for Blue Meridian Partners, including sourcing and leading Blue Meridian’s relationships with select investees.
Managing Directors are members of a dynamic leadership team. Primary Responsibilities

A Managing Director oversees and manages, delegating and working with other team members where appropriate, activities that may include but are not limited to the following:
Lead Strategy and Investments in Regional Initiatives
Partner with the CIIO to refine and continuously improve the Places elements of Blue Meridian Partners’ regional investment strategy.
Co-develop an outcomes framework and own and deliver strategic outcomes related to investments in comprehensive place-based partnerships and related elements of the regional investment portfolio.
Conduct and manage due diligence to explore opportunities and make investment recommendations, developing, with team, compelling and feasible investment recommendations.
Manage the Places portfolio of investments overseeing and supporting their impact and performance.
Capture ongoing learning from investments and broader trends to continuously inform and improve Blue Meridian’s and investees’ strategy and operations.
Serve as an external spokesperson/representative of Blue Meridian and assist as needed with fundraising, BMP Partner engagement, and other activities.

Lead Relationships with Investees

Ensure investee leaders and their teams receive excellent relationship management and support from Blue Meridian.
Earn and maintain the respect of investees and serve as a trusted partner and advisor to a diverse range of senior leaders in a community. This includes representing Blue Meridian Partners with regional public sector leaders, regional funders, business and community leaders, and advising on strategy and regional investment plans; evaluation and evidence building; fundraising; strategy design; and human capital and communications.
Craft performance milestones with investees and chart a roadmap to success.
Design and facilitate investee meetings, strategy sessions and performance reviews.

The Managing Director of Investments opportunity at Wallace offers a senior role in the management of a substantial endowment with scale enough to pursue a sophisticated asset allocation strategy and have access to top quality managers, that is also small enough to allow the Managing Director direct involvement in all investment processes, including helping set the overall strategic direction of the endowment and researching individual managers across all asset classes. The opportunity also offers a mission-driven investment opportunity at a leading nonprofit that values collegiality and takes pride in contributing to improvements in education, youth development and the arts at a national scale. Endowment Management
The Foundation’s investment goal is to earn a total return that will provide a steady stream of income to fund the grantmaking and operations of the Foundation in support of its mission while preserving the real or inflation-adjusted value of the Foundation’s total investment assets over long periods of time. We use a forward-looking, research-driven process to refine our Asset Allocation Strategy and identify top quartile investment managers with the aim of exceeding a challenging benchmark for total endowment performance. The Managing Director will join an Investment Team consisting of the Chief Investment Officer (CIO), an Investment Officer, an Investment Associate, and an Investment Assistant. All members of the team work across all asset classes within the endowment. Members of the Investment Team conduct site visits to managers’ offices on a regular basis in the US and periodically overseas.
Responsibilities
The Managing Director of Investments contributes to the effective management of the Foundation’s endowment by successfully fulfilling these responsibilities: 1) working with the CIO to develop and implement the asset allocation strategy; 2) contributing to the selection of new managers and decisions on continuation/termination of current managers across all asset classes; 3) leading our risk management work and operational due diligence which includes supervision of the Investment Associate; and 4) contributing to our team-based learning culture.
The Managing Director works with the CIO to design and implement the Foundation’s asset allocation strategy. Drawing on knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses of leading asset allocation strategies and techniques, the Managing Director will contribute to the assessment and refinement of the Foundation’s asset allocation strategy and will use quantitative models to estimate the expected returns and volatility of prospective asset allocations in various market scenarios. The Managing Director contributes to asset allocation strategy presentations at IC meetings.
Investment Due Diligence (IDD) on Current Managers
We review current managers two to three times each year, depending on asset class, and wind down managers at least once annually. The review includes analyses of each manager using a broad range of qualitative and quantitative analytical tools prior to meeting with the manager through conference calls and site visits.
The Managing Director will have responsibility for regular IDD on a set of current managers across all asset classes. He or she will prepare a written analysis covering staff, strategy, portfolio holdings, performance, style, risk metrics, and risk controls after each Investment Due Diligence meeting.
Investment Due Diligence (IDD) on Prospective Managers
New managers are identified by Investment Team members through reviewing investment manager databases, attending conferences, networking with institutional investment peers, and meeting with bank capital market groups. The Managing Director may identify and recommend prospective managers in any asset class. The CIO, Managing Director and Officer jointly conduct the rounds of Investment Due Diligence on prospective managers.
Operations Due Diligence (ODD)
The Managing Director leads the Foundation’s Operations Due Diligence work for both current and prospective managers, supported by the Investment Associate, whom the Managing Director supervises. The Managing Director reviews our overall approach to ODD on an annual basis to identify, recommend and implement best practices to improve our ODD. Under the direction of the Managing Director, the Investment Associate prepares ODD reports on current managers annually and on prospective managers as needed.
The Managing Director leads the Foundation’s Risk Management work in Investments by: 1) preparing risk management reports for the Investment Unit; 2) reviewing our overall approach to Risk Management in Investments – covering both strategic and tactical risks – on an annual basis to identify, recommend and implement best practices to strengthen our risk management practices; and 3) supporting the Investment section of our annual foundation-wide Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) process.
Global Economic Analysis
The Managing Director contributes to the preparation of quarterly global economic analyses with a focus on understanding the potential impact on the Foundation’s endowment. These analyses support the CIO in preparing his regular report to the IC.
Team-based Learning Culture
The Managing Director contributes to fostering a learning culture with colleagues in Investments by sharing investment insights day-to-day and at team meetings, and by contributing to or leading process improvement efforts based on best practices and other analyses.
As the supervisor of the Investment Associate, the Managing Director takes a professional development and learning approach to build and deepen the Associate’s knowledge across the investment field, with a focus on ODD.
Qualifications
Ten to fifteen years relevant experience in institutional endowment management, which would include demonstrated experience in:
Developing asset allocation strategies; and
Identifying and conducting due diligence leading to the selection of high-quality investment managers across multiple asset classes.

Earn and maintain the respect of investees and be a trusted point of contact.\nSupport the development and implementation of investee scaling plans. Help craft performance milestones with investees and chart a roadmap for success.\nTake ownership of investee quarterly performance reports, capturing current performance, risks, and future potential. Prepare materials and talking points for Partner updates.\nDesign, participate in, and sometimes facilitate investee meetings, strategy sessions and performance reviews.\nLead research, conduct interviews, and analyze data to support Blue Meridian’s sourcing and due diligence efforts to explore potential investment opportunities.\nContribute to Innovation Initiatives\nTo expand our work and enhance our competitiveness, Blue Meridian will develop from time to time “innovation initiatives.”. These will typically be cross-staffed by members of the Blue Meridian team on a part-time basis, depending on their skills and experience as well as team members’ interests wherever possible. With senior team members’ guidance and collaboration, the Senior Associate, Portfolio Strategy and Management, will:\nContribute to and sometimes lead activities that may include project planning and management, research, developing strategies, concepts and proposals, and developing and implementing new programs.\nQualifications\nAt least seven years of professional/advanced academic experience in finance, management consulting, philanthropy, economic mobility, social justice or a related field in the private or public sector are required. Knowledge of or experience working in the direct-service nonprofit field is an advantage. An advanced degree with a concentration in business administration or public policy is preferred but not required.\nA passion for issues affecting children and youth, as well as social justice.\nStrong interpersonal and relationship skills, with the ability to represent Blue Meridian externally in alignment with its core values and culture.\nSophisticated and diverse analytical skills and facility in quantitative and qualitative methods are ess\nExperience in building and maintaining performance measurement systems/reporting.\nStrong oral and written communications skills are essential, including the ability to present to senior groups and craft well-written prose and PowerPoint materials.\nDemonstrated strategic and highly rigorous professional approach, balanced by a flexible and empathetic demeanor and responsiveness to the needs of investees, teammates and Partners.\nSound judgment and discretion, seeking input and feedback, listening well and sometimes making difficult decisions independently while understanding the need for collaboration and leadership’s endorsement of results. Open to finding creative, alternative solutions to challenges and disagreements that may arise.\nResults-oriented, with a track record of executing against agreed goals and deliverables.\nStrong computer skills with extensive knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and the ability to master new software quickly; experience with Microsoft Dynamics CRM and SharePoint is a plus.\nAble to travel approximately 20% of work time.\nSalary & Benefits\nTotal compensation includes an annual base salary that falls in the $90,000 to $100,000 range, the potential for an annual incentive award based on performance, and an exceptional benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, 403b retirement plan with employer contributions and generous time off.
