Position Summary

The Executive Director (ED) serves as the chief executive officer of MHAB and is responsible for the overall leadership, strategic direction, and operational excellence of the organization. Reporting to the Board of Trustees, the Executive Director provides visionary leadership while ensuring strong financial stewardship, regulatory compliance, effective property and asset management, and meaningful engagement with residents, staff, funders, and community partners.

Key Responsibilities

Organizational Leadership & Strategy

  • Provide strategic leadership aligned with MHAB’s mission, values, and long-term goals
  • Partner with the Board of Trustees to develop, implement, and monitor organizational strategy
  • Serve as the primary spokesperson and ambassador for MHAB
  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, equity, and continuous improvement

Financial & Asset Management

  • Oversee the organization’s financial health, including budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management
  • Ensure sound stewardship of housing assets and capital improvement planning
  • Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local funding and regulatory requirements
  • Collaborate with auditors, lenders, and funders to ensure transparency and fiscal integrity

Property & Program Oversight

  • Provide executive oversight of property management, maintenance, and resident services
  • Ensure high standards of housing quality, safety, and customer service
  • Support resident engagement initiatives that promote community stability and empowerment

Board Relations & Governance

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to the Board of Trustees
  • Support effective board governance, including meeting preparation and policy implementation
  • Keep the Board informed of organizational performance, risks, and opportunities

External Relations & Partnerships

  • Build and sustain strong relationships with government agencies, funders, developers, and community partners
  • Identify and pursue funding opportunities, including grants and public/private partnerships
  • Advocate for affordable housing and community development initiatives

Staff Leadership & Development

  • Lead, mentor, and support a diverse and mission-driven staff
  • Promote professional development, performance management, and succession planning
  • Ensure compliance with HR policies and best practices
  • Commitment to equity, inclusion, and community-centered leadership

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in public administration, nonprofit management, urban planning, or a related field preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years of leadership experience in affordable housing, nonprofit management, community development, or a related field
  • Ability to obtain Certified Occupancy Specialist(COS) and Certified Manager of Housing(CMH) certification within six(6) months of hire
  • Demonstrated experience in financial management, property or asset management, and regulatory compliance
  • Strong leadership, communication, and relationship-building skills
  • Knowledge of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Department of Housing and Community Development, Housing Authority of Baltimore City and other affordable housing programs strongly preferred
