What the Editor Does The Editor revises auction lot descriptions and photographs provided by the Cataloging department before publication in auction catalogs. This role ensures consistency, accuracy, ethical standards, and clarity while enhancing the value and appeal of auction listings for bidders.

Key Responsibilities

Revise auction lot descriptions and photographs to meet company standards for accuracy, tone, style, completeness, and fairness in representing items in their current condition.

Enhance lot descriptions by highlighting details, context, or provenance that add value and bidder interest.

Review photographs for clarity, accuracy, and adherence to company photo standards.

Identify opportunities to increase lot value, including potential consolidation or separation of lots, and communicate recommendations to the Chief Editor.

Flag potential ethical, legal, or safety concerns related to prohibited, illegal, explicit, or unsafe items.

Notify the Chief Editor of high-value or high-interest items within each auction.

Report errors discovered during live auctions to the Chief Editor promptly.

Maintain familiarity with auction platforms, cataloging workflows, and editorial standards.

Perform other editorial duties and special projects as assigned in support of auction operations.

Supervisory Responsibilities This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Exceptional attention to detail with strong organizational and confidentiality skills.

Strong written communication and technical writing abilities.

Ability to edit both text and photographs in alignment with company standards.

Proficiency with computer systems, typing, and office software.

Ability to learn and use auction management platforms and photo-editing software (single and batch).

Strong time-management skills with the ability to prioritize competing deadlines.

Ability to work independently and collaboratively with on-site and remote team members.

Dependable attendance and punctuality.

Positive, supportive, solution-oriented approach to teamwork.

Minimum Qualifications

Degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related field preferred but not required.

Prior experience as a text editor is required.

Prior experience as a photo editor preferred, but not required.

Strong research and fact-checking skills.

Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office and/or Google Workspace applications.

Ability to pass background and reference checks.

Working Conditions & Schedule This position operates in a fast-paced editorial and administrative environment requiring sustained focus, accuracy, and adaptability. The role involves extended periods of computer-based work and occasional in-person inspection of consigned items when directed. Occasional overtime may be required based on auction schedules.

Schedule: Monday - Friday, 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. (8-hour shift with 1-hour unpaid break).
