Position Purpose This position is responsible for reviewing, analyzing, approving, and underwriting difficult, complex individual consumer requests and products within company and industry guidelines. Functions include reviewing financial statements, credit reports, and applicable ratios (i.e. debt-to-income, loan-to-value); examining transactions to ensure accuracy and completeness; preparing formal reports for review; ensuring that documents are consistent and uphold to company and industry guidelines; applying fraud detection techniques, performing compliance reviews; assisting with re‑structuring of loans based on lending guidelines, serving as a consultant/technical resource on difficult problems and questions; providing work direction, feedback and training to junior underwriting and processing staff including mentoring lower level underwriters and processors on credit decisioning, department procedures and policies; delivering/facilitating of technical training to ensure organizational consistency. This position also assists with the processing and closing of residential mortgages in all stages to ensure compliance. May act as a team lead and provide performance feedback to less senior department members. May act as backup in absence of Supervisor.
Essential Functions
Evaluate loans pursuant to quality control, internal and agency guidelines.
Responsible for the accuracy of all information in the loan files to meet quality control standards and portfolio and secondary marketing investor guidelines.
Ensures compliance with all regulatory policies and procedures.
Recommends improvements in procedures and processes as necessary to ensure the optimum efficiency and effectiveness of the credit union.
Performs other duties as required.
Performance Standards
Provides excellent member service (internally & externally).
Assists department to achieve loan production volumes as determined annually.
Keeps up to date on credit union and secondary market policies, procedures, and services.
Loans are processed accurately and timely.
Executed documents are accurate and in compliance with all lending policies.
Qualifications Education/Certification High school diploma or GED required. Business school, associate degree or equivalent is a plus.
Required Knowledge
Basic understanding of MS Office Suite.
Strong understanding of lending regulations.
Strong understanding in processing/underwriting procedures.
Strong understanding of the State of Hawaii real property laws/regulations such as land court, Ohana dwellings, ADU’s, lava zones, and various types of leasehold properties.
Proficient in income analysis including complex variable income, self‑employed, retirement, seasonal, REO, etc.
General understanding of condo projects and agency guidelines, both new and existing.
Experience Required Recent direct underwriting experience (3 or more years) in Mortgage Loan Operations, which includes processing and closing conventional first mortgage loans pursuant to Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and other secondary market investor guidelines.
Experience underwriting loans with mortgage insurance, delegated authority experience is a plus.
Familiar with various first‑time homebuyer, down payment assistance programs, and affordable housing programs offered through federal and state/local agencies such as HHFDC, HHOC, City and County of Honolulu.
Expertise with Loan Origination Systems (LOS) and Automated Underwriting Systems (DU/LP) technology involved in the loan process.
Skills/Abilities
