Starting salary $800 (commensurate w/experience) per week
Position Overview Theatre By The Sea (TBTS) is seeking an Assistant Technical Director (ATD) for its 2026 summer season. The ATD supports the Technical Director in the safe, efficient installation, operation, and maintenance of scenic elements for a four‑show musical season. Scenery is primarily designed and built offsite; the ATD assists with load‑ins, assembly, troubleshooting, show support, crew supervision, and ongoing scenic maintenance.
All scenic installation at TBTS requires the use of a hemp rigging system. Applicants must be comfortable operating a hemp system.
This is a hands‑on position ideal for a collaborative, detail‑oriented technician who enjoys working across prep, tech, and run phases of production in a fast‑paced summer stock environment.
Primary Responsibilities
Assist the Technical Director with scenic load‑ins, changeovers, installations, and strikes
Support daily scenic operations during technical rehearsals and performances
Assist in supervising scenic run crew, deck crew, and fly crew
Help ensure safe working practices and maintain a clean, organized backstage environment
Troubleshoot scenic and mechanical issues during rehearsals and performances in coordination with the Technical Director
Assist with the maintenance and repair of scenic elements throughout the run of each production
Coordinate and assist with the transportation of scenic and prop elements between the rehearsal studio and the theatre
Communicate proactively with the Technical Director and Production Manager regarding scheduling needs, staffing concerns, and production logistics
Qualifications
Prior experience as an Assistant Technical Director, Lead Carpenter, or equivalent role in regional or summer stock theatre
Strong knowledge of stage tools and machinery, working experience with hemp rigging systems, and scenic installation
Ability to read, interpret, and work from scenic drafting and ground plans; drafting experience preferred
Working knowledge of lighting and audio systems sufficient to support cross‑department coordination
Ability to take direction while also working independently and problem‑solving in the moment
Comfortable working across prep, tech, and run phases of production
Strong communication skills and a collaborative working style
Valid driver+rsquo;s license and comfort operating production vehicles preferred
Schedule + Commitment
Full‑season commitment required (including load‑in and load‑out)
Positions are scheduled for 40 hours per week
Evening and weekend work required based on rehearsal, performance, and production schedules
Overtime is limited, requires prior approval, and is typically confined to technical rehearsal and changeover weeks
Compensation
Competitive weekly rate, commensurate with experience
Housing and travel assistance may be available
