- The Government Information Center (GIC) is seeking a UI/UX Designer who will work on innovative projects promoting state and local government programs, services, initiatives, and information.
- The successful candidate will play a critical role in developing, maintaining, and enhancing our new design system, ensuring consistency and a high standard of user experience across all state government digital platforms.
- This role requires a blend of creativity, strategic thinking, and strong technical skills to deliver user‑centered designs that place accessibility standards, best practices, and user research at the forefront.
- The UI/UX designer will work within the Creative Team and will have strong collaboration with the Web Team. This position reports to the GIC Creative Director.
Key Responsibilities
Design System Development
- Working with a project lead, collaborate on the creation, implementation, and ongoing management of a comprehensive design system that includes reusable components, patterns, and guidelines.
- Ensure the early design system is scalable and adaptable to various digital products and services.
UX Design
- Design high‑fidelity UI components and UI patterns that are visually appealing, accessible, and user‑friendly.
- Develop and maintain style and branding guidelines to ensure visual and functional consistency across all digital products and services.
- Ensure alignment with the state government’s branding standards and effectively communicate these guidelines to internal teams and external partners.
Collaboration and Communication
- Work closely with the Design Lead, UX researchers, developers, and other stakeholders to ensure alignment with project goals and user needs.
- Advocate for user‑centric design principles and best practices within the organization.
- Lead design workshops and brainstorming sessions to foster innovation and collaboration.
Accessibility and Inclusivity
- Ensure all designs comply with accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG 2.1 AA and higher) and promote inclusivity.
- Conduct accessibility audits and implement necessary adjustments to enhance user accessibility.
Quality Assurance and Handoff
- Collaborate with developers to ensure accurate implementation of designs.
- Provide detailed design specifications, guidelines, and assets for development teams.
Qualifications
Education
- A Bachelor's Degree in UX/UI Design, Graphic Design, Interaction Design, or related field is desired.
Experience
- 2 to 5 years of experience in UX/UI Design is desired, with a strong portfolio demonstrating expertise in design systems and accessibility.
- Proven experience working on digital projects in the government or public sector is a plus.
- Experience with common user research methodologies is a plus.
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in design tools (such as Figma or Adobe Creative Suite), accessibility tools (WAVE, ANDI).
- Familiarity with front‑end development languages (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and their impact on design.
- Understanding of WordPress editor environments; ability to thrive in a remote setting and utilize collaboration tools such as Slack, Teams, and Wrike.
