Association of Minnesota Public Educational Radio Stations Contract – Freelance position

AMPERS is the largest statewide association of community radio stations in the United States, currently comprised of 17 independent community radio stations in Minnesota. The stations primarily serve underserved populations including greater Minnesota, tribal nations, diverse communities, and students. From Grand Marais and Thief River Falls,to Mankato and Winona, and just about everywhere in between, we’ve got Minnesota covered. AMPERS helps member stations serve their diverse communities by generating revenue, developing and sharing programming, and works to correct the narrative regarding historically underrepresented communities through accurate storytelling and reporting.

MNN is a weekly radio segment covering ideas and events relevant to Minnesota’s Native American communities since 2014. MNN is produced and distributed by AMPERS and airs on tribal and community stations across Minnesota. MNN reaches more than 124,000 listeners each week. The team includes a majority of Native reporter-producers all sharing in the editorial and story-telling duties.

AMPERS is seeking a Minnesota-based contract Executive Producer to manage the weekly MNN newscast. The ideal candidate has experience in audio production and working in and with Indigenous communities.

Duties include:

Executive Produce weekly MNN shows highlighting 2-3 stories from Indian Country-Minnesota,

Pitch story ideas when needed,

Source interview contacts from Minnesota’s Indigenous communities when needed,

Coach MNN producers on how to meet production standards and adhere to the MNN style & reporting guide,

Manage the weekly editorial calendar, including ensuring that producers deliver stories on deadline,

Lead monthly MNN editorial meetings in partnership with the Director of News Programming and VP of Programming,

Communicating progress about weekly shows to AMPERS’ Director of News Programming and VP of Programming,

Monitor and post to the MNN social media platforms,

Communicate progress about the weekly show to AMPERS, and

Other duties as assigned by AMPERS staff.

Required Qualifications:

Experience with storytelling and/or journalism,

Experience with either recording, voicing, and/or audio production,

Experience with media storytelling,

Organized and detail oriented,

Excellent communications skills,

Willing to both participate in training and train others,

Desired Qualifications:

Experience working with and reporting about Indigenous communities,

Experience covering Minnesota Indigenous issues across regions of the state,

Experience with audio editing.

Candidate will report to AMPERS’ VP of Programming and Director of News Programming.
