The vocal music program plays an important role in building school culture and student pride. Choir students have opportunities to perform for their peers, families, and the community while developing musical skills, confidence, and teamwork. The program also collaborates with Santa Fe South’s growing Mariachi program, giving students the opportunity to experience and perform music that reflects the rich cultural heritage of our community.

Position Summary The Choir Director is responsible for developing and leading a comprehensive vocal music program serving both middle school and high school students. This position includes teaching beginning and advanced choir classes, cultivating students’ vocal technique and musical literacy, and fostering a positive, inclusive ensemble culture. The director will also teach sections of Music Appreciation designed to fulfill a fine arts credit while exposing students to a wide variety of musical styles, cultures, and historical contexts.

In addition, the Choir Director will support the growth of the school’s

Mariachi program

by helping students develop the vocal techniques and stylistic understanding necessary for traditional mariachi singing. The director will collaborate with instrumental mariachi instructors to ensure students gain authentic performance experiences within the ensemble.

The Choir Director will organize performances, support school culture through music, and provide meaningful musical experiences that build confidence, collaboration, and artistic expression among students.

Essential Responsibilities Choir Instruction

Plan and deliver high-quality instruction for

beginning and advanced choir classes

at the middle and high school levels.

Teach vocal technique, sight‑reading, music theory fundamentals, and ensemble performance skills.

Select developmentally appropriate and diverse repertoire that supports musical growth and cultural awareness.

Differentiate instruction to support students with varying levels of experience and ability.

Foster a positive, inclusive choir environment that encourages participation, teamwork, and artistic risk‑taking.

Support of Mariachi Program

Collaborate with the mariachi program director(s) to support the

growth of the school’s mariachi ensemble

.

Teach and coach students in

traditional mariachi vocal style

, phrasing, diction, and performance practices.

Help prepare student vocalists to perform with mariachi ensembles during concerts and school performances.

Incorporate elements of

Mexican musical traditions and mariachi repertoire

into vocal instruction where appropriate.

Support recruitment and development of student singers interested in mariachi performance.

Music Appreciation Instruction

Design and teach

Music Appreciation courses

that fulfill a fine arts credit.

Introduce students to a wide range of musical genres including classical, jazz, world music, contemporary music, musical theater, and popular styles.

Incorporate listening activities, discussion, music history, and cultural context into instruction.

Create engaging learning experiences that help students develop an understanding and appreciation of music as an art form.

Performances and Program Development

Organize and direct concerts, performances, and other events that showcase student learning.

Prepare students for school concerts, community performances, and potential festival or contest participation.

Collaborate with other fine arts staff to support school-wide performances and events.

Recruit and retain students in the choir program and support program growth.

Student Development and Culture

Encourage student leadership, responsibility, and teamwork within the choir program.

Build strong relationships with students and foster a safe, supportive classroom culture.

Support the school’s mission and values through music education and performance opportunities.

Collaboration and Communication

Work collaboratively with middle school and high school staff to support student success.

Communicate clearly with students, families, and administrators about performances, expectations, and opportunities.

Participate in staff meetings, professional learning, and school activities.

Administrative Responsibilities

Maintain accurate attendance and grading records.

Manage choir materials, music library, equipment, and performance logistics.

Follow district policies and procedures related to instruction, student supervision, and safety.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Music Education, Vocal Performance, or related field (required).

Demonstrated knowledge of vocal pedagogy, choral literature, and ensemble direction.

Ability to teach both introductory and advanced choir students.

Knowledge of music history and diverse musical traditions for Music Appreciation courses.

Strong classroom management and student engagement skills.

Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience directing middle school and/or high school choirs.

Experience preparing ensembles for concerts, festivals, or competitions.

Ability to accompany rehearsals on piano or work collaboratively with accompanists.
