Communications and Public Relations Specialist
Xavier University is seeking a Communications and Public Relations Specialist for its in-house, award-winning marketing and communications team. The ideal candidate will be quick on their feet to cover and craft digital news stories, capable of aligning content with audience interests, and adept at engaging with a team to support communications and media relations efforts — all with the goal of earning day-to-day visibility for the Xavier brand. Ultimately, this position will assist in the daily creation of content that will drive Xavier’s external communication, support the University’s owned media channels, and generate visibility for the Xavier brand.
Responsibilities
Excel at covering campus breaking news stories while remaining versatile enough to write features, press releases, SEO-focused content and social media copy
Work with Xavier’s senior administrators and University departments to coordinate campus-wide messaging for employees
Write stories while adding photos and video to produce mixed media
Generate press releases as needed, make connections with local media and serve as a point of contact for media members
Raise awareness of stories and generate interest from local, regional and national media outlets
Work with students, faculty and administrators to tell stories that showcase outstanding Xavier programs, courses, events and attributes
Use social metrics and internal communications channels to inform storytelling approach and attain maximum interest from target audiences
Create clever, creative, fun, or informative content
Work with a collaborative and creative team of professionals
While much work can happen during a normal business day, this position will call for nights and weekends as needed
Ensure the University’s editorial standards are followed in all areas of communications, which includes checking for correct style and grammar
Skills
Working knowledge of digital marketing tools including the Adobe Creative Suite, social media channels, marketing automation platforms, tools to update web pages, understanding of analytics, and more are important
Ability to capture photos and video as needed
Creative ability to win the hearts and minds of our various audiences, persuading them to act, be engaged, or continue their support for Xavier — the position helps shape Xavier’s brand narrative
Understanding of all major social channels
Understanding of utilizing a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) tool to generate e-newsletters
Ability to update web pages using a Content Management System (CMS)
Ability to perform other job-related duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
1-3 years' experience in communications and public relations or an adjacent field.
