Scholarship Position Description
This position is awarded a scholarship for 2026-2027. All scholarships are determined by position, time commitment, responsibility, and financial budget determined in April. The Editor-in-Chief selects a student to be awarded a scholarship to serve as the Managing Editor of The Daily Utah Chronicle.
Expectations
ATTENTION: This position requires a significant time commitment. If you are chosen and accept this position, it will be expected that you can satisfactorily meet the time commitment necessary. This means that you agree to not accept other positions outside of student media or otherwise make commitments that will impact your ability to meet this expectations.
In case the Editor-in-Chief must leave town or cannot come to The Chronicle for some other reason, acts as a backup and has the final say in all matters for publication and editorial decisions.
Oversees daily content production across the Chronicle. Sets expectations and goals for production in conjunction with executive leadership and student media advisors.
Communicates and encourages communication between and among all staff members regarding content. Especially works to bridge gaps between desk editors, digital team, copy team, and social media team regarding story content and sharing. Acts as a third party, along with the Editor-in-Chief, to solve any disputes that may arise.
Creates and manages the weekly budget and coordinates each desk’s stories during Editorial Board. Uses Slack consistently for workflow process.
Runs Editorial Board alongside the Editor-in-Chief and addresses specific recurring errors with the appropriate desk editor.
Streamlines questions to appropriate sources, including but not limited to desk editors, writers, and the Editor-in-Chief. Partners with desk editors in matters of content change that could affect the story’s focus, voice, or purpose.
Passes off and publishes all stories that come through the copy desk and manages content after copy review. Schedules with the Copy Director to ensure content goes through the proper editing process. Works with the Photo and Design Director to facilitate visual content for stories.
Oversees the website and its development. Updates staff profiles, reviews The Chronicle’s website daily, and brings any problems to the attention of the Editor-in-Chief and web developers.
Moderates comments submitted through the website.
Works with executive leadership to plan and execute Chronicle-wide initiatives.
Regularly responds to messages via Slack and Gmail and attends all mandatory meetings.
Meet with the Editor-in-Chief regularly to evaluate the platform’s progress and address any ongoing challenges.
Qualifications
Prior leadership and/or management experience preferred.
Preference given to applicants with prior experience at The Chronicle or in Student Media.
Must be able to commit to the demanding schedule and maintain high levels of activity and quality of work.
Interest in and experience with journalism, news, or media preferred.
Computer proficiency and willingness to learn new programs and software required.
Experience or knowledge of marketing, brand management, audience growth, and engagement preferred; willingness to study and learn required if not.
Must be enrolled student progressing satisfactorily toward a degree.

Applicants for this position will be reviewed during spring 2026 and interviews will be scheduled by the Chronicle Editor-in-chief. The position is open until filled. The experiential learning term is May 2026 through April 2027.
