Mortgage Underwriter
The Mortgage Underwriter is responsible for rendering credit decisions on mortgage and home equity loans in accordance with credit union policies and procedures and with secondary market guidelines. The Mortgage Underwriter also interacts with vendors, attorneys, members and realtors to ensure a quick and efficient approval and closing process. Essential Functions Underwrite mortgages and home equity loans in accordance with applicable policies and procedures; issue commitments for such loans and clear loans for closing. Cross sell credit union products, including non-real estate products. Participation in employee incentive program is required. Must meet or exceed sales goals established by management. Monitor the status of mortgages and home equities in process. Follow-up with members, member's attorneys, appraisers, etc. in an effort to expedite the processing of applications. Evaluate loan applications to determine eligibility, acceptability, and compliance with federal and state regulations, secondary market guideline and credit union requirements. Examine property appraisals for compliance with federal and state regulations, secondary market guidelines and credit union requirements. Superior analytical, organizational and problem solving skills. Ability to work independently, analyze data, take and recommend appropriate actions with minimal supervision. Coordinate with credit union real estate attorneys, PMI companies, investors and other vendors, when necessary, to facilitate mortgage approvals and closing. Approve modification requests, subordination agreements, PMI removal requests and release of liability agreements when requested by members. Prepare home equity commitments and home equity loans for closing. Support mortgage department staff with member walk-in's and telephone contact. Assist management with other various duties, as assigned. Qualifications Knowledge & Experience: Applicants must possess the following qualifications or an equivalent combination of education and experience: Education: Associates degree or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience: A minimum of 5 years' experience at a senior level in mortgage processing, underwriting and closing of mortgage loans. A minimum of 5 years' experience underwriting mortgage loans for secondary market investors. Skills Ability to effectively communicate and interact with internal and external contacts including members, processors, loan originators, managers, staff, realtors, vendors and other clients. Other Skills Ability to work with basic mathematical concepts such as percentages, ratios and fractions. Ability to analyze complex data and determine. Ability to define problems, collect data and draw conclusions. Demonstrated ability to handle large volumes of work effectively and to work within prescribed deadlines. Must be a licensed New York State notary public or be willing to take the necessary steps to obtain the notary public license within six months of hire. Assist Training Department or other staff with mortgage or home equity education. Government underwriting experience preferred. Working Environment Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods of time in an office. Must be available to work overtime when warranted. Licensure Requirements In compliance with the Secure and Fair Enforcement for Mortgage Licensing Act of 2008 (S.A.F.E. Act) and the statute's regulations, applicants must be eligible to register as a Mortgage Loan Originator (MLO). Candidates being considered will be subject to a credit check and fingerprinting.
