Incumbents in this position are responsible for organizing and conducting a variety of sports activities, games and leagues at a City community center. Duties include planning, organizing, coaching and overseeing football, basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, volleyball, and cheerleading for Recreation Division youth athletic programs, setting up equipment and maintaining records.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Organizes and conducts games, contests and/or activities; coaches/officiates sports/activities.
Inspects facilities and equipment for compliance with safety standards.
Maintains activity records.
Ensures compliance with center rules and regulations; documents incidents.
Sets up/distributes equipment.
Assists children with schoolwork.
Advises parents regarding a child’s participation in recreation program and other matters as appropriate.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Data Utilization: compile, assemble, copy, record and/or transcribe data according to a prescribed scheme.
Human Interaction: provide guidance, assistance and/or interpretation to others such as program participants, co‑workers and the public, on policies, procedures and standards.
Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Materials Use: use sports equipment or materials used in essential functions.
Verbal Aptitude: utilize a wide variety of reference and descriptive data such as regulations, facility rules, accident reports, incident reports, attendance records, registration lists and forms, and general operating manuals.
Mathematical Aptitude: perform and explain basic math including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages and decimals.
Functional Reasoning: carry out detailed but uninvolved written and oral instructions; routine work according to prescribed standard practices, with some latitude for independent judgment.
Situational Reasoning: exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations evaluating information against subjective criteria.
Environmental Factors: risk exposure to adverse conditions, e.g., temperature, noise extremes, potential violence, disease or pathogenic substances.
Physical Requirements: lift, push and pull up to 50 pounds; run, stoop, kneel, climb and swim for demonstration, coaching or officiating.
Sensory Requirements: recognize and identify similarities or differences between colors, shapes and sounds associated with monitoring children’s behavior and coaching/officiating activities.
Other Requirements
Must be available to work varying shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Qualifications Successful completion of thirty semester hours of college credit in Recreation, Physical Education, or a Social Science; plus one year of experience administering recreation programs, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

City residents must have resided in the City for at least one (1) year at the time of filing their application to be eligible for the preference points.
