Position Overview The Customs Compliance Specialist is responsible for ensuring all import activities are fully compliant with U.S. Customs regulations while supporting the coordination of inbound international air freight shipments. This role serves as a subject matter expert in trade compliance and acts as a key liaison between internal teams, suppliers, freight forwarders, customs brokers, and regulatory agencies.
This position also supports pharmaceutical and life sciences shipments, requiring strong attention to detail, regulatory awareness, and experience handling time-sensitive and temperature-controlled freight.
Key Responsibilities Trade Compliance & Regulatory Oversight
Ensure all import activities comply with U.S. Customs regulations, HTS classification rules, PGA requirements, and trade laws
Validate HTS codes, duty rates, country of origin, and customs valuation
Maintain import records in accordance with CBP retention requirements
Monitor regulatory changes and advise internal teams on compliance impacts
Prepare, review, and manage import documentation including commercial invoices, packing lists, air waybills, and certificates of origin
Partner with customs brokers to ensure timely and compliant clearance, resolving holds, exams, and discrepancies
Assist with internal audits, post-entry corrections, and voluntary disclosures
Air Import & Logistics Coordination
Coordinate international air import shipments from origin through final delivery
Communicate with overseas suppliers, airlines, and freight forwarders to schedule and track shipments
Monitor shipment status and proactively resolve delays or documentation issues
Coordinate domestic transportation upon arrival in the U.S.
Provide shipment updates and reporting to internal stakeholders
Pharmaceutical & Specialized Imports
Support importation of pharmaceutical and life sciences products
Ensure proper handling and documentation for regulated and temperature-sensitive shipments
Coordinate closely with partners to maintain compliance with industry requirements
Process Improvement & Cross-Functional Support
Maintain product master data including HTS classifications and import-related elements
Support vendor onboarding by validating international compliance requirements
Serve as an internal resource for import-related questions and training
Identify opportunities to improve compliance processes, shipment visibility, and cost efficiency
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, International Business, Logistics, or related field preferred or equivalent years of experience
2+ years of experience in import compliance, international logistics, or air imports
Strong knowledge of U.S. Customs regulations, HTS classification, and country of origin rules
Experience working with customs brokers, freight forwarders, and international suppliers
Pharmaceutical or regulated industry experience is a strong plus
Certified Customs Specialist (CCS) certification preferred but not required
Proficiency in ERP systems and Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook)
Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
