We have an opportunity at our corporate offices in Chicago for a Sr. Communications Manager (Hybrid) on our Enterprise Communication team. This is a hybrid position reporting into our Chicago, IL office, requiring 3 days a week in the office.

This role is in collaboration with the Director of Leadership Communications and advances executive thought leadership at the AMA, helping shape how the CEO and senior leaders show up internally, externally, and across social platforms. This role brings polished executive writing, industry knowledge, and cross‑channel execution to ensure leadership communications remain trusted, cohesive, and high‑impact. The role supports the AMA's commitment to science‑based medicine, physician leadership, and building trust at a time of disruption and change across health care.

Communications & Thought Leadership Development

Collaborate with the Director in identifying opportunities to position organizational leaders as true thought leaders in medicine

Research industry trends and data to inform the thought leadership strategic goals

Draft pitches to proactively secure AMA leadership at events and conferences with diverse audiences

Support senior leadership with preparation for speaking engagements and participation in industry forums and major conferences

Manage relationships with conference hosts, working with the Board office on logistics and planning for events

Collaborate with the social media team to develop the CEO's LinkedIn content and op‑ed strategy

Develop and manage a proactive CEO social media content calendar aligned with policy moments, enterprise priorities, and external narratives

BU Collaboration and Alignment

Manage integrated calendar tracking all AMA speaking engagements, reducing redundancy, maximizing impact, preserving resources, and ensuring the appropriate people are appearing at the appropriate venues

Oversee BU calendar processes, ensuring cross‑enterprise coordination on major announcements and media opportunities

Partner with Director Employee Communications on aligning employee‑facing messaging

Working closely with the Director of Operations, provide key project management support for high‑visibility, Enterprise projects

Staff Management

Lead, mentor, and provide management oversight for staff

Responsible for setting objectives, evaluating employee performance, and fostering a collaborative team environment

Responsible for developing staff knowledge and skills to support career development

May include other responsibilities as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor's degree required

Minimum 7+ years of experience in strategic communications, thought leadership development, and executive messaging

Experience in people management preferred

Proven ability to develop and execute thought leadership plans, with demonstrated success managing large, complex, multi‑stakeholder initiatives

Proven ability to work well under deadline pressure and meet deadlines while keeping both long‑ and short‑term organizational goals in clear sight

Detail‑oriented with excellent writing and editing skills; ability to collaborate across diverse stakeholders to generate compelling content

Excellent critical thinking and planning skills required; able to build and implement roadmaps

Polished interpersonal, presentation, oral communication, and consultative skills required

Some travel required

The American Medical Association is located at 330 N. Wabash Avenue, Chicago, IL 60611 and is convenient to all public transportation in Chicago.

This role is an exempt position, and the salary range for this position is $104,872–$138,737. This is the lowest to highest salary we believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. An employee's pay within the salary range will be determined by a variety of factors including but not limited to business consideration and geographical location, as well as candidate qualifications, such as skills, education, and experience.
