Senior Associate Editor
The Atlantic is seeking a senior associate editor who will initially be assigned to join the Community Team, focusing on facilitating and moderating discussions among The Atlantic's subscribers and journalists.
The ideal candidate will be thoughtful, organized, and energized by fast-paced work and the desire to foster respectful conversations. The role initially will primarily require 10a to 7p EST, Monday thru Friday shift schedule. The role will also involve occasional later nights, early mornings, and weekends.
This editor will lead the Community team's efforts to moderate comments on The Atlantic to uphold our guidelines and communicate decisions. The ideal candidate should therefore have prior experience with moderating comments, interacting with readers, and escalating as needed. This editor will also be integral in designing and building a social forum for Atlantic subscribers.
As such, this role will at times include night, early-morning, and weekend work. The associate editor will also be counted upon to help senior editors brainstorm any and all elements of community at The Atlantic. Big ideas are encouraged, and an appetite for experimentation is necessary. This editor will be expected to collaborate with colleagues across the newsroom, as well as with peers from the product and growth teams, and other parts of The Atlantic's business operation.
Responsibilities will include:
- Monitoring and adjudicating comments
- Interacting with The Atlantic's community and brainstorming new ways to engage with subscribers
- Revising community guidelines
- Iterating moderation workflows
- Promotional support for Community initiatives
Qualities of a successful candidate include:
- At least five years of experience in journalism, ideally focused on moderating comments or community engagement projects
- Excellent writing and research skills
- A deep understanding of The Atlantic's mission and journalism
- Open-mindedness and a commitment to diversity of opinion and respectful debate
- Strong time management skills, with the ability to communicate effectively within a tight-knit team, as well as across a large organization, and to accomplish both discrete tasks and longer-term projects on deadline
- Familiarity with user analytics
- A strong desire to learn from our community, understanding why they're choosing to participate on our site and giving that feedback to editorial, product, and other teams
- A natural knack for bringing people together, whether through rigorous debates or delightful surprises or, ideally, both!
Salary minimum: $85,000; Salary maximum: $95,000
This position is based in Washington, D.C. This is a Guild position.
