company? Here’s your opportunity!

We are a commercial property & casualty insurance company looking to fill entry‑level underwriting positions. We consider a variety of backgrounds and do not require insurance experience. Our on‑the‑job training provides the right candidate the opportunity to be successful in this position.

What is underwriting? Insurance underwriters use analytical skills to review information from an applicant to evaluate the degree of risk involved in a business or operation to determine if the applicant should be approved for a policy. The underwriter then uses our technology and data to determine the coverages to provide and the premium to be charged for the risk. Our underwriting professionals utilize strong communication and customer service skills by asking questions and making decisions over the phone and via e‑mail with our agents.

What will you do?

Underwriting activities: Review submissions, endorsement requests and/or renewal policies from agents for acceptability prior to quoting. Follow up with agent or broker for additional information as necessary. Determine proper classification of risks and use company software to rate risks. Identify proper coverage structure for risk, including any policy endorsements and exclusions required, develop proposed rating, and apply schedule credits/debits within company guidelines. Make underwriting decisions on routine insurance risks and refer risks outside underwriting authority to appropriate referral underwriting resource as appropriate.

Quoting: Prepare and deliver quotes to agents within underwriting authority or with proper referral underwriting approval as appropriate. Resolve outstanding concerns with agents, answer questions, and may negotiate changes as appropriate. Explain commercial coverage to agents and/or brokers. Ensure the terms and conditions of the quotes are clearly outlined and guide agent through the binding process. Manage pending workload to ensure agencies receive excellent service on quotes when needed.

Quality control and review: Perform quality control inspections of system bound policies, endorsements, and renewal policies. Review applications, agency correspondence, and other underwriting information received versus policy to reconcile any discrepancies or errors and to ensure accurate information is contained in policy. Review proper rating classification and coding of bound policies using combination of information available in application, loss control inspections, and telephone conversations with agents and brokers. Handle problems and take appropriate action on unusual discrepancies. Initiate policy changes and take underwriting actions as appropriate within underwriting authority, including cancellation or non‑renewal.

Third‑party data: Utilize third‑party tools, data, and services to enable better underwriting decisions, improve accuracy of rating/exposure information, and produce better underwriting results.

Quality assurance and testing: Participate in the testing of rating, quoting, policy administration, and other software as required, including the completion of assigned test cases within designated time frame. Identify potential problems and notify testing coordinators.
