Summary The Product Stewardship and Export Compliance Specialist serves as the company’s internal subject matter expert on chemical regulatory compliance and export control requirements. This position ensures compliance with applicable federal, state, and international chemical regulations, as well as U.S. export control laws, overseeing hazard classification, regulatory reporting, and export classification determinations.
Authority The specialist has the authority to perform all tasks and duties assigned, including creating, editing, reviewing, and approving policy, procedures, and work instructions, raising compliance risks to Top Management, and stopping work when a hazardous situation appears imminent.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Serve as a subject matter expert for internal and external regulatory compliance matters (e.g., commercial and logistics processes, staff training, vendor interactions, and customer complaints).
Oversee the company’s compliance with the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) regarding labels, SDSs, and related paperwork.
Work closely with the SDS Software Administrator to review, update, and maintain SDS templates and formats.
Remain updated on federal and state laws, updating policies accordingly.
Conduct compliance audits to evaluate adherence to established policies and identify opportunities for improvement.
Oversee the maintenance and retention of regulatory reports, registrations, permits, and applications.
Develop and implement an export compliance program to ensure the organization operates in accordance with state and federal laws.
Utilize the Export Administration Regulations (EAR) for export control and assign appropriate ECCNs for export compliance.
Prepare and submit U.S. export license applications and approvals as required; collaborate with Logistics to ensure appropriate export declarations, documentation, and physical marking requirements for all export shipments.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in a science field, or a combination of experience and education to perform essential functions.
Expert knowledge of foreign export laws and regulations, including EAR and ECCN.
Expert knowledge of major federal regulations such as IMERC, PFSA, TSCA, PHMSA, EPCRA, OSHA, etc.
Innovative problem‑solving skills and broad perspective.
Effective collaboration with stakeholders of diverse viewpoints.
Experience creating and training others on policies and procedures.
Ability to work with a wide variety of individuals, including international and domestic customers.
Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
Willingness to obtain an Export Compliance Professional (ECoP®) certificate.
Preferred
5+ years of relevant experience in import/export compliance in the hazardous chemical industry.
Current certification for 49‑CFR and IATA dangerous goods transportation.
