Role Summary Evaluate and underwrite conventional, FHA, VA, jumbo, home equity, and self‑employed mortgage loans nationwide using company, investor, and state/federal requirements to limit portfolio risk. Responsibilities include end‑to‑end credit analysis, appraisal review, approval/decline decisions within delegation, and collaboration with loan origination and processing teams.
Minimum Qualifications
Mortgage Processing Experience: Must have significant experience in mortgage processing and/or lending (e.g., Mortgage Processor/Closer, Mortgage Loan Officer, Credit Researcher).
Knowledge of the underwriting process and understanding of applicable rules and regulations.
Preferred Qualifications
Delegated Credit Authority: Ability to approve loans without a second signature (typically $1–2M authority).
Certifications: VA SAR/LAPP and/or FHA DE authorization/certification.
Loan Types & Experience: Proven underwriting experience across conventional and VA; strong credit analysis, tax returns, and transcripts experience.
Key Responsibilities
Document & Data Review: Collect, organize, and validate borrower/property documentation; confirm receipt/integrity of materials.
Credit Analysis: Determine borrower creditworthiness using qualitative/quantitative methods (e.g., DTI, LTV) per company, investor, and regulatory guidelines; analyze credit independently of scoring systems.
Appraisal Oversight: Conduct thorough appraisal examinations; work with appraisers to ensure collateral meets guidelines (including VA/FHA reviews under SAR/LAPP/DE authority where applicable).
Decisioning: Approve or decline submissions within assigned authority; authorize disbursements; prepare counteroffers; recommend rejections/alternatives; issue adverse‑action notices in line with ECOA.
Exception Handling: Analyze exceptions/suspensions; recommend suitable mortgage products for marginal or atypical scenarios.
Collaboration & Support: Partner with originators/processors; respond to Underwriting Assist Desk queries; help maintain underwriting manuals; mentor processors/closers/loan officers.
Compliance: Maintain knowledge of company’s products and guideline changes; adhere to Bank Secrecy Act policies and procedures.
Required Skills & Experience
Underwriting Expertise: Conventional and VA underwriting experience; proficiency with FHA tools (FHA Connection, Total Scorecard) and industry systems.
Financial Analysis: Advanced personal/business financial analysis; expert in tax return and balance sheet review.
Regulatory Knowledge: Fair Lending & Consumer Protection (ECOA, TIL, RESPA); NFCU/investor guidelines; USPAP for appraisals.
Communication & Judgment: Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal skills; sound judgment and initiative; organizational excellence.
