ARBORIST
Under general supervision, performs skilled and unskilled work in the maintenance of woody and herbaceous plants located on city owned public lands, in parks, athletic fields and around/adjacent to other City facilities. Operates moderate-sized equipment as required. Reports to the assigned Parks & Public Lands Manager.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Perform arboriculture work in the care and maintenance of the City of Kissimmee's public trees and plants, using International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) standards (ANSI300) for tree selection, planting, pruning, training, removal, stump grinding, mulching, fertilizing, disease identification and treatment.
Execute City Ordinance abatement tasks regarding trees and vegetation ordinances and conduct field inspections of landscape installations and related permits.
Operate all equipment safely and efficiently, including truck, bucket truck, aerial lift, wood chipper, chainsaw, hand saw, stump grinder, loader, safety harness, climbing saddle, rigging ropes, and tackle. Maintain appropriate personal protective equipment.
Supervise, train, assign, and evaluate staff in Parks & Public Works divisions; coordinate activities and address employee related issues.
Inspect woody and herbaceous plants to determine need for removal, pruning, training, spraying, or other treatments; keep records of time, material, requisition of supplies, and prepare contract documents and reports.
Perform a wide variety of tasks required for maintenance and repair of Parks and Recreation Department and Public Works Department areas and facilities, including tree risk assessments, grass cutting, urban forestry, custodial, construction, equipment operation, and repair.
Carry out oversight of woody and herbaceous plant planting, pruning, and removal; keep and submit records and reports.
Interact and communicate with various groups and individuals including supervisors, city personnel, co-workers, customers, and the public.
Minimum Education and Training Associate's Degree plus at least three years of arboriculture experience, or an equivalent combination. Must possess or obtain an ISA Certified Arborist Certificate within six months of hire. Must hold a valid Florida driver's license and obtain FEMA 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, and 800 incident command system certifications within six months of employment.
Skill and Qualification Requirements
Knowledge of Parks and Recreation Department methods, procedures, and policies related to arborist duties.
Ability to comprehend, interpret, and apply regulations and procedures.
Proficiency in general facility and grounds maintenance procedures and techniques.
Skill in operating required machinery and tools safely and making minor repairs.
Capability to respond calmly and quickly in emergency situations.
Ability to prepare accurate records, reports, and calculations (algebraic operations).
Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to read and interpret a variety of materials.
Independent judgment and decision-making; capacity to identify problems and recommend solutions.
Physical ability to operate vehicles, trucks, equipment, and hand/power tools, and perform moderately physically demanding tasks involving climbing, stooping, kneeling, and handling loads of 20–100 pounds.
Ability to coordinate eye-hand coordination with machinery and to operate motor vehicles.
Capacity to differentiate colors and shades of color; adapt to stressful conditions.
Working Conditions Work both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold, wetness, humidity, traffic hazards, machinery hazards, toxic agents, noise, smoke, dust, pollen, dirt, etc. May be subjected to moderate danger or risk.
