Position Summary
This is specialized artistic, scientific, and technical work that involves the preparation of anatomical, pathological, and surgical illustrations, 3‑D models and animations, and other media used in biomedical communications. The work involves significant scientific knowledge and use of specialized software to design, organize, and produce educational materials. The illustrator works independently under general direction, collaborates with faculty, and develops interactive teaching materials.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent and at least 2 years of professional experience.
Preferred: Master’s degree in Medical Illustration.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Competencies
Extensive knowledge of artistic media applicable to scientific subjects.
Proficiency in current technologies and specialized software (Cinema 4D, Maya, Unity, Unreal, ZBrush, Photoshop, After Effects).
Considerable knowledge of anatomy, pathology, surgery, and major medical sciences.
Effective communication skills and customer service orientation.
Training in virtual reality, augmented reality, and 3‑D modeling for innovative teaching.
Physical Demands
Normal office environment.
Lifting and carrying up to 20 pounds.
Fine finger dexterity to design and build models.
Using computer technology for all applications.
Verbal communication with clients and viewing graphic images.
Maintaining focus on detail and managing multiple priorities.
Duties / Responsibilities
Collaborate with faculty and staff to prepare illustrations, 3‑D models, animations, and diagrams for publication, posters, brochures, and lectures.
Demonstrate proficiency in specialized knowledge and innovate with medical illustrations and interactive elements depicting anatomical structures and procedures.
Select artistic techniques to ensure clear communication of scientific data.
Remain current with new technologies, recommend innovations, and propose solutions to meet customers’ needs.
Attend emerging technology conferences and coordinate with the Educational Resources team.
Research new technologies (e.g., VR headsets, interactive materials) and participate in initiatives to integrate them.
Autonomously research, analyze, and select technologies for educational challenges.
Operate with little direction, ensuring accurate and timely project delivery.
Ensure appropriate project prioritization.
Serve as a consultant for other departments, create logos, translate technical data into designs, build exhibits, and perform related tasks.
